47mm coolers in 2024?

I'm starting to think about upgrading my mini-itx boxes. Not cause they need it, they're still fast enough for what we do, but I might need to use one board to help debug the kiddo's flakey gaming station, and I'd rather upgrade mine than his :p

Anyway, looking at 8600G, in a case with just enough room for a 47mm height cooler. Currently using a axp-90r (full copper) with a noctua fan which shaves it down to 46mm and really improved the noise profile.

Looks like the axp-90 x47 is the same thing, but less sketchy mounting and flipped 90 degreees so the fins are parallel to ram instead of perpindicular.

Anything else I should be looking at?

nope. there isnt really anything else beside IDs, and youre already beating it.

There is also the Noctua NH-L9a which is a bit shorter (but gets the job done just fine on a 65W processor) so you could swap the fan for something even quieter or higher flowing if needed. Shameless plug for my 8600G FS thread

The X47 full copper is the best in its size. and is also cheap.

The included fan performs better than Noctua. It is a little bit louder at/near full speed. However, if it will be really close to a side panel/grill, it sounds better than the noctua. Noctua's slime 92mm fan has a pretty loud whine, when its really close to a panel or grill.

However, don't be fooled, the mounting system sucks ;)

IME, the base is quite convex (I've used 2 X47 and one X53). That, combined with the poor mounting system, can make it difficult to get an level, even mount.

I recommend lapping (sanding) the base to be more flat. This makes it easier to get a level, good mount.

Well, the x47 looks slightly less sucky than the previous version. At least I can keep the backplate and probably won't bend my board. So... anyway, I've got low expectations, so it's fine.

Well, in my case (Chopin), the 15mm fan that came with the R would rub on the grill a bit, which was super annoying. The 14mm Noctua has a bit of room. It's a full mesh side, so it's not too restrictive. A little bit of fan curve love and it's not silent, but the wife thought hers had no fan. It's behind her monitor with the fan pointed away from her, so it's certainly not loud anyway, but there's a fan. And another tiny one in the power supply that I run pretty slow to keep the noise reasonable, too.

I'd get the 65 mm tall l9a if you have the room for it, otherwise (as in, this case) I'd swing for another cooler (unless you absolutely need the l9a's height). It's not a bad cooler, but if you have room there are much better ones, even from noctua.

There's also Alpenföhn Black Ridge as a high-end 47mm cooler (inc. fan height), but everything I've seen is that the Thermalright performs great (I think better than Black Ridge), and is much, much cheaper.

So I built it out. Runs well, and the fan noise wasn't as bothersome as when I built the am4 build, so I left the termalright fan on it to save myself a bit of work. Cpu frequency limits hit before it even gets that hot, so the cooler is working.

the X47 is a nice cooler but performance will be better and less noise with the noctua fan. I run one in my daughter's 5500 am4 mini itx case. does the job just fine
