460GTX SE (288sp version) is this to compete with the 5770?

just read this. I don't get this card at all. it can't be cheap to make unless yields have been that bad? and given that you can get a 5770 for around a hundred bucks right now what is the point here? not to mention he deals on the 460GTX 768mb version (maybe the best bang for the buck going right now)

this is from their their conclusion

The GTX 460 SE 1GB is a good card but it is still quite baffling to us. With it you are more likely to get consistent framerates at higher image quality settings than a GTX 460 768MB and yet there are much better options out there for high resolution, high IQ situations if you are willing to spend a bit more. If anything, this card seems like a push to hit the largest cross section of the $150 to $200 price point by catering to a niche market. Will such a strategy translate into actual sales during the lucrative Christmas shopping season? We'll just have to wait and see...

This is the card the GTS 450 should have been. No amount of overclocking will allow a 5770 to reach 6850/5850 levels and an OC'd 460 SE pulls it off. The 460 768mb was bandwidth starved. If Nvidia can drop the price and push the GTS 450 and 460 SE down, then it will give the rumored 6770 (a rebadged 5770) a big run for its money.

how are they going to push the price down? they have flat given up on competing price wise with the GTX450. this is way more expensive to make.

if the 460 768 is the best bang for your buck then why do users give it so much crap. ive been looking all day on many forums including here and I hardly see anyone recommending the 460 768mb version.

because its memory limited. even so I have seen it at 115AR and that is a hell of a deal. as for it being 768mb you might not be able to use 8XAA on a 2.3mp monitor. still everyone is falling all over themselves for the 460GTX when at the same price the 6850 is better. but you can literally get two 460GTX 768mb for the cost of one 6870 or 470GTX. even at stock a pair of the 768mb will spank either of those. yeah your memory limited but for the price to performance I think you can live with 4XAA (and even then only on couple of games.). consider this, H gave the nod towards the 580GTX due to the 5970 being memory limited @ 4mp with 8XAA. they had to drop to 4XAA. that is on a 1gb frame buffer. and that is almost twice the pixels of a 2.3mp screen.

The 5770 and the 460 SE are in two different price points and performance tiers.

It really is an interesting GPU. If these things get to be as cheap as the 768MB 460, I can see it being cannibalized.

This 460 is retarded, you can currently get a REAL 460 1GB for the same price right now

It's a card for oem buyers and ignorants.
1 GB GTX 460 SE looks better in supermarket brochure than GTX 460 768.

Mystery solved.

The sad thing is that the 460SE is actually slower than the 460 768MB in most situations until you apply AA. Right now the 460 768 MB for 115 AR is a much better deal. I think the price of the 460SE is a bit high considering the stock version won't outperform a 5770 in most cases. The nice part of it though is if you can hit its top OCs such as 850/3980 it can outperform a 5850 in certain games.

Yup, as if EVGA didn't try and profit off fools with the FTW edition, now they need to target the $150 range buyers too. Will they every be satisfied!? :D
