I currently have a Rosewill Capstone 450w power supply. I'm about to get an XFX R9 290 DD and the PSU requirements on it is ridiculous; its asking for a 750w minimal.

Based off this website:
https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards

It says that an R9 290 needs a 550w PSU and uses about 31A. The Capstone has about 37A total.

Below is my rig specs, all stock:

i5-3570k 3.4ghz
8gb ddr3 1866mhz
500gb sshd
XFX R9 290 DD stock
5 fans: 3x 140mm, 2x 120mm
Rosewill capstone 450w

I have read a few posts about other people easily running GTX Titans and 780s with a decent 450w power supply. Do you think I'm also in the clear with my current setup?

If you keep everything at stock, you're fine. Mild overclock will probably be okay as well. Estimations always estimate on the high side. Mostly because a lot of people buy crap PSUs that can't output their full rated wattage, or don't have the full capacity available on the 12v rail.

Yes you can run a 290 on a 450w psu. I was mining with a 430watt with my 290x. HOWEVER. You will not be able to load the cpu at all. It'll just shut off.

You need to get a bigger psu if you want to do anything other than mining

If you're talking about the CX430, it has a 12v rail capable of providing 384 watts at most. The Capstone has 444 watts available on the 12v rail. The Enermax Revolution 430 watt provides 420 watts at most, followed by the EVGA at 404 watts. Every other 430 watt PSU on Newegg has less than 400 watts on the 12v rail.

Also, a 290 will use 20-30 watts less than a 290x.

Thank you for your input on this topic, very useful info. I got it to so I can play Dragon Age Inquisition and when it comes out on PC next week. I'm only gaming on a 1200p monitor.

I haven't done any measurements but a 450W with a 290 + a decently powered cpu seems kinda scary IMO. It might work on paper, but the PSU is going to be stressed. Let us know how it turns out.

Except a 3570k at stock is a relatively low power CPU. Probably 60-70 watts under load at most.

I just got my R9 290 DD today and everything is looking solid so far. While running GPU-Z on BF4, maxed out, temps never rose pass 69c, VRM 1 was around 79c and VRM 2 was around 58c. I checked the watt usage and the highest it got to was around 175w.

So the 450w power supply seems more than enough atm.
