It's obvious you don't know WTF you are talking about. And I think everyone here is tired of seeing your fucking public service anouncements.

edit: and this drive is instock at zipzoomfly

haha you are so funny, you dont know anything other than what you read in books. I have an idea..actually use computer systems and learn that way...along with building systems you break systems..thats how you learn from mistakes..not reading a book and saying "OH NO I CANT DO THAT ILL BREAK MY MACHINE". First off, I've been building systems back when Apple IIe first came out, I DO know what im talking about..I've ran 3 distro's of linux, every Windows OS, including the trash ones aka, os2 warp etc. I didnt sit back and read about them in a book, I was using Dos 6.22 when you were still in diapers.. Windows XP will run on NTFS and FAT32, Close that stupid MCSE book you'r reading and actually learn the operating system by trial and error. Your knowledge of windows astonishes me, with your hittleresque quotes of "YOU NEED MEDIA EDITION TO HAVE A HD BIGGER THAN 137GB" You absolutely do not. If you are the average bozo that can barely even install a hd on the IDE cable, reading a book as to which direction the red pin stripe goes, then yes you will need sp1 or media edition. I didnt want this to turn into a flame post, but when morons like you come spouting off your bullshit what do you expect? Everyone to bow down to your moronic remarks and praise your wise BOOK based knowledge?

I didn't call him anything - it's already under his name. And you're right, just b/c someone is new to the forum doesn't mean they are a noob when it comes to computers, but when they start saying shit about how the fat32 system doesn't run on windows xp, and telling all the forum veterans that we're wrong, then they can be classified as a noob.

yea I wasn't really dirrecting this at you I meant as a whole, The guy asked a quistion he doesn't want a long debate about nothing. The guy asked if you where going to preorder a HD not. He didn't say anything about formats and stuff. Thread hijacking is also in the rules if you guys want to talk about formats start a new thread.

I guess I should practice what I preach eh, well I have a 80GB that has about 3GB left so 400GB would be a nice addition but it is very expensive. I found a 160 on newegg for less than 100$ so I think I'll just go with that (For now).

now who doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about

irregardless of how poorly he was presenting his arguement, thats not how we educate the membership

the Facts
the first statement
"be careful windows XP only supports 137gb hard drive space. If you really want a 400gb HD
you will need the media edtion."

is patently false without further qualifications, the arguement susequently modified to reflect that

there where only a few senerios covered so far so a few more...
completely inapplicable if the drive or array employs SCSI Drivers
(IDE RAID, SATA RAID, IDE PCI Card Controller)

W2K w\ SP3 and XP w\ SP1 are not required
its a simple registery entry and can be done without the service pack, and even from outside the OS with appropriate software

if you do install and partition from the CD, you can always enlarge the partition into the unallocated space employing diskpart.exe (microsoft commandline tool) without resorting to Partition Magic (after the registry entry)

BEST JD TCR, either one of two senerios seems likely
1. you tried good naturedly to assist the membership but presented the arguemnt poorly
and subsequently compounded it with the attitude you adopted, irregardless of which, I extend an apology on behalf of the forum because thats not how we react to such senerios

or 2
your trolling in which case you caught quite a load
(bet you guys didnt consider that did you )
but are now a point of moderator interest :p

now play nice

on topic, hell no I dont want one of those
Im a firm beleiver in the smaller cheaper HDDs in the Redundant array
just hurts alot less if one goes tits up
I can deal with the extra heat and power

/debate

i dont want any of these.. too expensive, and i like the nice round 250... i'm gonna pick up another 2 more of them soon (as you can see, i need it, lol), and in sata flavor, then the 250 IDE goes to the xbox (yes, even the old ass xbox can support more than 137gb)

that is the plan. i always follow through. ;) as soon as i see SB81P in person - and like what i *see* - i am buying one and starting ordering shit. here's the list:

SB81P
P4E 3.6
1GB GeIL PC4000 (have that already - might reuse)
X800XP-PE PCI-E
2x400GB
1x74GB raptor
Plextor DVD-+RW (newegg has them for $130 with $30 rebate, btw)

will build an external module with USB hub, matrix orbital 20x2 VFD, and IR remote receiver.

man your system is gonna whoop my system's ass :(

which x800 xt are you getting? and what is the matrix orbital 20x2 VFD?

400 bucks for 400 gigs is kind of a ripoff dont you think? I mean for half that price you can buy 2 200gigs, JBOD them and boom..400 gigs heh

if you willing to accept the JBOD tradeoffs
there are really very few reasons to adopt JBOD
in hardware fewer in software (for the desktop)

All I can say is this that would be a lot of data to loose, yes I know you said you would be doing a RAID but still data loss enters my mind.

which x800xt? -BBA most likely. i like the stability, thanks. won't be overclocking it, so... :)

matrix orbital VFD - go to www.matrixorbital.com and look around. then go to www.lcdc.cc (i'm on their forums as codeflux) - that's the software i use.

Ehm, I'd be weary of buying anything from www.buy.com ... I recently placed an order there and after having much trouble with my account I called them (Due note, that this was a task in itself, seeing as they do not post a customer service phone number, And even advertise that they don't post one  ) ANYWAY, after finally getting a Customer Service # I got on the phone and talked to Mr. Chimichanga, who transfered me over to someone else, who ended up deleting my account on accident. Therefore, I do not suggest making an order with www.buy.com, Unless of course, you speak fluent Spanish ;)

that's based on your experience. here's mine. i ordered a 19" CRT from them for my dad - it's been a couple of years now, so at the time it was expensive. the monitor came damaged; i called them, complained, they said they don't have this model anymore, but they'll give me the comparable one. i said i only wanted sony, and only with these specs. they gave me a part number - it was for a 21" CRT. i said OK - and they shipped it. for free. so now my dad has a kick-ass (even now) 21" sony trinitron CRT. nice, huh?

buy.com has always been reliable for me - i've been buying from them for a few years now. but then again, everyone has their horror stories.

now, let's not stray from the topic. how 'bout them 400's? :)

I hate to break it to you, but I am running a RAID Setup with a total of 265GB, with no Service packs at all, and I get all of it usuable. So obviously windows can support more.

looks like you missed the part where any IDE Controller card, IDE onboard RAID, SATA RAID, or SCSI controller where excepted from the 137GB (128GiB) issue

always have been
they all use SCSI drivers

I found an ide version of one of these on ebay bought 10 days ago..
for $300 bin...
It was listed as a simpletech external usb drive.
got it yesterday, testing it today..
usb was really slow on my ic7-max 3..
ide was a little faster, but using a pata2sata adapter didn't give me that much performance increase either..:-p
I've got an ide2scsi adapter, so i'll try that and see what happens..
with sata i'm getting 45/65mb/s for write/read..
drive was brand new..still under warranty as well:-p

Waiting for Seagate's 7200.8 series; 133GB platters, so -1 platter for less noise, less heat and better performance all around....

SP2 while a slight imjprovement over the previous state of things,
its still a half assed and misleading security blanket
when what is called for is a bulletproof vest

of course if the public actually knew how to do this
Id not be making money off doin it for them

(off subject) BEST JD TCR - you had best quit while you are ahead....or behind as it looks like...nice links there Ice :D

(on subject) I don't think I will get one of those drives anytime soon...I am getting more and more backed up data on my drive and would like to keep it on something other than DVDs but just can't make myself cough up the dough for that size drive...maybe when I get around to building my new system I will get one but hopefully the price will be down a lot

not from hitachi I don't.....

but when the WDs come out, that's another story.

I'd take a Hitachi over most WD's right now... the newer ones with quiet/cool bearings seem ok; it'd have to be one of those. But really, I'd rather just have a Seagate and not ever worry about it.

that's how i feel as well. i don't trust IBM. i mean - Hitachi. but a 400gb Seagate with 133gb/platter seems like a pretty darn nice idea. and i've read somewhere that seagate has upped their warranty on hard drives to 5 years. 5 years!!! i've never used a hard drive for more than 1.5 years - always upgrade - but 5 years... anyway, just a thought. i hope SB81P hits the shelves soon so i can start building shit, instead of drooling and talking about it... :)

I don't need it. lol. of my 350GB (formatted) of available space, I have 40GB filled (40 on my main 120GB SATA, and 0GB (absolutly nothing!) on my new Maxtor 250GB drive).

hte new hitachis are great drives.. i just put a 40gb 7200rpm laptop drive in my dads pIII lappy and it breathed another year or two into it, he LOVES it now. and i HATE wd drives... much rather go with seagate or maxtor. or hitachi now :)

i wouldnt want one.. too expensive, and i still have plenty of space on my maxtor 200gb. 20gigs free on my 40gig windows part, and 60 on my 160gb storage part... im happy with it :)

also, why are scsi/sata/ide controllers exempt from the 137gb rule? i was told this actually a few days ago and i called bullshit on it since ive always been able to use all my drive, sp or no, so why is this? (its a sata drive, and 48 LBA.. learned that the hard way when my sata boot rom took FOREVER to initialize the loading of windows, when i moved it over this drive... had to do a bios update..)

heh, i reformatted last week and have yet to install bit tornado or edonkey

aye... the 250 i have has 12 gigs left... its days are numbered... then again, if i had a reliable hard drive in my xbox that would free up 65 gigs

yeah, it would take atleast a year to use it, but I got some temporary storage needs that would require it.

I've heard that drives over 5400 rpms shouldn't be used in xbox due to heat issues...do you know if this is true?
