I'm building a new system beginning next month and am torn on which would provide the bigger boost to performance. This system will be my primary gaming rig.

Anyway, I can either: (a) pick up a 74GB 10K RPM Raptor and a GF6600 GT, or (b) stick with my existing 80GB 7200RPM 8MB cache Maxtor and opt for the GF6800GT. I'm really leaning towards the former, as I want load times to be snappy as well, but not sure how much difference the extra speed in the HDD will make. (Not to mention, a GF6800GT is much more than I've ever spent on a vid card.)

The performance gain of the 6800gt over the 6600gt is much greater than the 10k rpm raptor over the 7200 rpm drive.

Go 6800gt and the 80 gig.

"Wood", eh? I don't think that wood would help his computer out any. But you never know, I have been proved wrong before

PS: I would do the 6800GT

Yeah - what he said.....

i think video performance takes priority over load times, because load times will be around forever, you want to get the 6800GT to last a long time, and it will last longer than a 6600GT.

And it looks like you can raid with another 7200RPM

dude i'm not going to start with you i'm not going to be ban or get a bad poster thing next to my name so back off.

Hehehehe,
Altec, you make me laugh.

A 9800Pro and a 120GB WD Drive will be smoked by the other two options of the 6600 or the 6800 and the 7200 or the Raptor. Thats just retarted.

Get the 6800GT

Wow - overwhelming response in favor of the 6800GT. Guess that settles that then. Thanks all.

(BTW, all benches I've seen have the 6600GT ahead of the 9800. In Doom 3 benches, the 6600GT smokes it, so the 9800 was never a consideration.)

Yeah, that's what happens when ATi's OpenGL drivers aren't as good as their Direct3D drivers.

Have fun with whatever card you buy. :)

I would get the 6600GT + Raptor.

Just because I really value a fast hard drive. For everything but games, this will be faster. The load times will be the only thing improved by the first option for games. Just IMO.

For you though, since its a gaming system, go with #2

I'd go with 6800 and the 80 gb maxtor because there isn't that much of a difference in speed inbetween the two (from the reviews i've seen).
