I need a nice large screen, so the 27" is out. Between the 40, 50, and 55", I will be sitting 3-4 feet back at first. Once I move my desk out of my bedroom and into a different room, I will be 10-15 feet because I have more space.

40" 4K $897.99
50" 4K $1197.99
55" 4K $1497.99

A 40" screen from 3-4 ft will be no different than a 27" from a closer distance.

If you want a monitor for television viewing and gaming, rather than productivity work, I would suggest the 55" or larger for viewing from 4-6". Take a look at the Panasonic TC-58AX800U. For computer use, you'll want a display that accepts 4k@60 444 chroma.

BTW, the "monitor" will be used for gaming, Photoshop, web browsing, watching movies, etc.

Right now the Samsung sets do not do 4:4:4/4K/60Hz which is a big deal if you want to use this a monitor. Many think this is a firmware issue but Samsung has issued two updates in the past few weeks and still no fix.

The only 4K TVs worth buying for monitor usage are the LG UB8500 or Pansonic AX800. The Panasonic may be the better bet, as it has a DisplayPort connector.

I tried a 49UB8500 but it hurt my neck looking up all the time. The size was nice but I don't think if you are sitting within 3 feet anything larger than 40" is probably too obnoxious.

I think I am going to go with the 40". I went into the other room, and while I will be able to sit 10-15 feet back while gaming, my wall isnt large enough.

40 inch is good if u want to sit close. Farther back you need something like 80+ to compensate the lost of details.

Even with 4K the pixel density at these sizes isn't all that high:

40" - 110 PPI
50" - 88 PPI
55" - 80 PPI

That means that realistically they would be tolerable at normal monitor distances because in comparison:

27" 1440p - 109 PPI
30" 1600p - 100 PPI
34" ultrawide - 110 PPI
27" 1080p - 82"

That means ultimately it relies on how much you are willing to swivel your neck around if you have it at normal monitor distances. The 40" in particular you want fairly close because at 100% scaling standard text can look pretty darn small.

Get 3x40" if you really want to go big :)

My choice would be - if FHD - further back. If 4K (OP didn't mention that), then 50" at similar as monitor's distances (but with trying to place it lower), 65-70-80", if further back. With main reasoning being - to use at somewhat common dpi at used to distances, simply gaining more desktop area/wider POV at higher resolutions.

Just FYI, a 1080p 55" monitor is retina at any distance over 7 feet. So you might want to go with that, instead of paying up for more pixels--that you won't see--which will cost you frames. Plus the relatively narrow selection of 4K displays available.

4K makes sense with huge displays (70",80",etc), where 1080p really starts to be deficient in PPI. Otherwise, at that viewing distance? Forget it and don't buy into the "next generation" 4K hype.
