Holy cow, did you know that most people don't even finish their meal before taking to Twitter to complain.

If you’re looking at someone’s Twitter feed and seeing Tweets like “The soup at Joe’s Soup Shack and Hat Store is the worst!” or “I didn’t order a dead fly with my turkey pot pie! #worstdayever” (because you can’t complain on Twitter without a hashtag), chances are that these Tweets were written before the person even left the restaurant about which they are griping.

I love watching everyone sit there on their cell phones at dinner time staring at their awesome electronic devices while my family and I have a conversation...

Perhaps they are doing the same thing with each other, but texting due to liberal use of racial slurs... :D :p

As a former server of 6 years I can tell you people bitch at every step of the restaurant process. The difference now is that Twitter listens, as it has no choice, where your server most likely doesn't give a shit about your irrational rant about how another table got their food first or your heavily-modified menu item isn't exactly what you wanted.

Unless I'm on call, phones stay in the car if we go out to eat.

I know some people who enjoy watching porn while eating, maybe they are doing that.

Well It makes sense - if you finished eating you are more likely to just say screw it and just avoid that restaurant in the future.

Isn't that the whole point of social media? Publishing something before you think about it?

What could possibly go wrong with that?

It is probably a wise idea to wait till you leave the facility before tweeting something bad, you still might get dessert, or need a refill on that beverage. I'm pretty sure most people here have seen the movie Waiting. Funny movie for those that haven't seen it. For me if I was that upset I would just not go back. It's likely that if it happened to you it happens to others, the place will run themselves out of business.

There's a reason I don't use twitter and only check facebook around once a week. Why does anyone think I want to see a picture of what they're having for lunch or whatever other inane thing they're presently doing.

Being a waiter or waitress is a tough job as people pay little respect. I like to tip 20% at meals and am fairly understanding about delays etc. That being said, I've had great servers and horrible ones. I find myself rarely going out anymore because my wife and I both cook and often are able to do better at home. A lot of restaurants have high prices and average food at best.

I belive it to be an actual disorder that people are developing. They're unable to experience something unless they Instagram/Tweet/Facebook/etc. about it first.

Its a sad sad trend in our society, giving many people "voices" or rather a way to complain about things and usually while remaining anonymous. Very hard to tell the difference between a disgruntle teen on a rampage cause they are mad at daddy vs a legit complaint.

A good rule of thumb is, if you are being genuinely nice and courteous to your server and they are not reciprocating, they deserve a bad tip. Good servers are so happy to have reasonable, friendly customers they will go out of their way to make sure that customer has a good experience. It doesn't always happen, sometimes for reasons out of the server's control, but effort should always be recognized when it comes to tipping. Most restaurant owners are pond scum and pay horribly ($2.33/hr here in WI) and do not pay for services like dish, laundry, and cleanup so much of this duty falls on servers, often in the middle of a dinner rush.

If you frequent a restaurant often and always tip well and are pleasant to be around, you become a regular and servers will fight over your table (literally, fight. I've seen it happen). Usually good regulars will go to the most experienced, most senior server on the staff, while bad regulars will be forced on the worst or newest servers. This is why you often hear some people say "I get bad service at every restaurant". Yup, 'cause you deserve it.

It used to be only at business lunch/supper restaurants did you see people glued to their phone clicking away on their tiny BlackBerry keys.

That was bad enough, but now...

Now it's whole families looking at their phones instead of each other...

..so sad really...

I've found that many don't experience after that. They are too busy "sharing" their experiences that they miss out on everything. Rides, concerts, air shows, plays, children performances (get a tripod and a video camera), etc.. They live life through a 5.5" LCD display. Click to share with friends on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... It's nice to look back and watch them again, but those are your memories. Not actually being there and enjoying everything. It's like watching a movie, but that movie is actually your life on the screen...

Sad stuff.

Lol, and letting other people's idea of fun/success make you bitter isn't sad?

I want to punch people who take pictures of their food before they are just about to eat.

I really wish smartphones were banned at restaurants..

My grandmother is one of those people that doesn't order off of the menu and gives 30 minute long lists of instructions to the server on how to prepare her food, then bitches and tells everyone how bad tge restaurant was when it doesn't turn out how she imagined.
Take restaurant reviews with a grain of salt. Usually the people that complain the worst asked for it.

People need to realize that you can send food back. Tweeting out a complaint before you've even given the restaurant a chance to fix the issue is just lazy, and it does a disservice to the people who actually work there. Restaurants are in the business to serve you. If you honestly tell a sever that something is too salty, or that you can't eat it because it's terrible, chances are high that they will let you order something else just to keep your business. If a cook is screwing up, then that feedback should make it back to the kitchen.

Most people believe that sending your food back is a surefire way to end up with spit, cum, stink palm, etc. on or in your food.

At our house the rule is Dinner at the Dinner table and cell phones off same applies when we go out to eat. That is family time and not to be disturbed by lame phone convos. I strongly believe the cell phone is the downfall of mankind.

This is the issue right here " they deserve a bad tip" NO! They deserve no tip, I'll happily tip 20% if my glass never sees empty (unless the house is packed then I'm more understanding) my food is brought out hot and you smile every time you talk to me. I've given no tips before, I've even left 2 pennies and a note saying "my 2 cents, less talking with friends and doing your job gets you a proper tip" because she would blab to friends for 15 minutes while my drink sits there empty. Surprisingly enough, next time I went in she was on the ball and got a nice 20% tip. Society is in such a we must tip no matter what mindset we let the slackers and half asses continue to do a half ass job since they know there's no real repercussions.

Drives me nuts when I see people taking photos of their meal.
I can sympathize with that, as not everyone can afford fancy food, so for some its a memorable moment they think worthy of a shot. Or the opposite is the case, and they got shit food and want to document how much the place sucks to share online later, lol! As long as its just a quick snapshot, doesn't bother me.

Only thing that bothers me is when they insist on getting their face in the picture too... food selfies. That's just narcissism taken to an extreme.

As a chef,I enjoy taking photos of well plated or tasty food. This is part of my job research and development.

I really don't see the issue. And also as a chef, I enjoy customers taking pics of my food.

Chefs with poor qc dislike this trend as it showcases the shit quality of their average dish. But someone who is as proactive about plating and food quality as myself, well, tbh, I find it flattering.
