I was contemplating this. I mean do I want a new 4TB coolspin for $130 or a ~1.5 year old used Ultrastar for ~$170.

Tempting but a recent Hitachi experience has put me off. Plus just a little out of my price range, you seem to have a lot of them! I like your ebay name!

At work I see early deaths from every single manufacturer some more than others but its not like I have thousands of each model so nothing statistically significant at all.

Same. Just had two WD 2tb blacks fail one less then a year old. But I see them all, WD, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu. It's mainly the really old drives that keep ticking. All this newer stuff just seems to fail right out of warranty.
