Probably because it's possible to function as a society without guns.

We kind of need cars and it's a little trickier to manage to get your car inside a building and end a double digit number of people.
Fine. We don't need video games, sports, tv, Netflix and so on to be a fictional society. We should just get rid of everything. Their is no value in any of those activities I listed. To hell if people enjoy them.

I'm no sociologist, but it seems apparent to me that the problems all stem from a lack of personal accountability. Every time someone does something bad, there are always people behind them ready to excuse or forgive them. This only encourages others to behave in the same manner because they know that they can get away with it. The only way we can reverse this idiocy is through iron discipline. No more fourth or fifth warnings, no more "time off for good behavior", no more idiotic defenses like "affluenza", etc. You break the law the first time and you will actually suffer for it. Make the penalty stiff enough that a person will actually think twice before committing a crime.

Well, the jails are getting bigger and bigger. So we seem to be getting more and more crazies out there. But I agree with you. Everything is so soft, and we have this mentality that people are fixed with a two hour counseling session and some prescription meds. I won't even pretend I know what the solution is.

Except video games, sports*, tv, Netflix and so on aren't capable of making someone dead unless you count binging until you die in your chair in a Cheeto-y haze.

* I know somebody is going to be smart and mention sports.

Still boggles my mind that people do this kind of thing. People went in just to have fun and play some video games and some didn't make it back out. Really sad situation.

What's really fucked up is that this type of thing was on my mind when I went to Quakecon two weeks ago. I was at the BYOC for the whole weekend and the thought of some nutjob with a grudge coming in to mow people down was on my mind the entire time. Kept thinking of scenarios of what to do and what not to do if that happened. Why has this become the world we live in?

Guns don't get up and shoot people on their own either. Just like cars aren't going to go all Maximum Overdrive and become sentient. The common denominator is fucked up people.

There ya go, new rule for video game tourneys, after losing you go to the mandatory decompression chamber until the event is over and everyone else leaves. The decompression chamber has scantily clad women serving everything from booze to burgers (that is until some SJW says how sexist that is), massage tables, spas, TV, video games, and psychologists on hand to let you better deal with defeat.
Bypass the silly tourney, how much just for the decompression chamber.:joyful:

Do you remember the last school massacre where a motor vehicle laid waste to dozens indoors?

Not true. I have a felony and can get a handgun. Non violent offenses don't count (most of them).
It's a little more in-depth than that.
18 U.S.C. 922(g) is the federal law that prohibits anyone ever convicted of any felony to ever possess any firearm either inside or outside of his home. The federal punishment for firearm possession by a felon is up to 10 years in prison.

And then we have cases where parents aren't allowed to punish their kids for misbehaving, teachers aren't allowed to punish kids, and yet we wonder why no one has a sense of personal responsibility.

Do you remember the last school massacre where a motor vehicle laid waste to dozens indoors?

If a deranged person can't use one method to achieve their goals, they'll use a different method. Running over kids while they wait for the school bus can easily result in just as many deaths. Or even just running a school bus off the road.

Now, the emotional impact may not be as strong in either of those scenarios, but emotion should not be a factor in making wide ranging political decisions. It happens far too often as it is, and that is part of the reason for the US's dysfunctional gun control.

Just curious, do these gaming events in FL have gambling involved?

Not legally, but there is not insubstantial prize money on the line. From the info coming out about the waste of pxygen who did this; he was clearly troubled and the game commentators commented on his "strange" behavior.

*Unless you've been pardoned, had your record expunged, or had your civil rights restored and then successfully petitioned to have your gun rights restored.

I've been told that all of my rights were restored. However, you're right. It was up in the air. So I was misinformed.

I got my voting packet in the mail today too. Doesn't really matter to me about the gun, I don't plan on getting one.

Much easier to blame things, than people. All the statistics show that violent crime per capita is significantly down in the last 25 years . http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/01/30/5-facts-about-crime-in-the-u-s/ . However, since it is shocking topic and HIGHLY politicized topic; it gets way more coverage.

It is easy to blame a thing and it is much more difficult to comprehend a fellow human being doing something so reprehensible and irrational.

And that right there is the crux. A different method just so happens to mean that I won't get murked at a LAN or concert because someone opened fire on a crowd.

Thank god it wasn't a Counter Strike tournament... it being a NFL tournament the spin will be a little more difficult than usual.
Yeah they will probably hide that it was madden and instead spin it that all games that are not Candy crush or something equally sugar filled are evil murder simulators. He will probably have been reported to own GTA5 and all the shooters...

While only a relatively small handful of gamers get rich playing online games, take away that incentive completely and I imagine shootings and suicide drives will continue to occur.

For instance:

"He killed himself and others because he lost his way of earning an income."

There will always be some excuse in cases like these. Root causes need to be addressed, and I dare say most aren't up to doing that at this point in time.

I'd like to contrast this thread, where a member of the gaming community raged and shot and killed people at a gaming tournament, with the 'McSkillet' thread, where a member of the gaming community raged and killed two innocent people with his car. I'd like to ask people to take some time and skim through both and think about it.

I actually agree with you.

This culture is what has made me always prefer America and Americans. More so than any other culture including my own.

Politics aside, meaning NOT politics! Something is seeping into your culture that I feel is cancerous. ie, it is killing your amazing Spirit.

I pray that you guys figure it out soon enough.

Ditto. :(

Back in my dad's day, people carried rifles to school, had shooting classes, etc. I remember high school kids with gun racks in their pickups(no, I don't live in the south, this was in CA). I certainly don't remember any school shootings back then but I didn't follow a lot of news either. Any parents I know today would not let their kid do what I did alone when I was age 6-10, going to a friends house or the store on my bike over a mile or two away, go to the park, etc. I wonder if it is a population thing where too many people and you get that experiment with rats when confined without enough 'elbow room' and they become violent. Yes, something in our society has broken.

what trigger that man Katz to do all these ? any insights? Could he possibly mix up reality w/ the fantasy of gaming? I mean, that guy studies Enviornental Sc. , these should be the last type of people who would do mass shooting

and how does a gun get thru the front gate? when I go to night club at Los Angeles, they scan me w/ a metal scanner.

Doesn't change the fact that no one is using weapons to defend themselves, but many are being killed by weapons wielded by assailants.

For what it's worth I've been involved in two situations where I intervened. The first I was at a gas station after work at about 3am. As I was filling up I noticed a guy standing in the doorway of the booth surrounding the cashier, he seemed to be talking to her. A few minutes later I see her banging on the window. As I started walking towards the store the guy ran out and hopped in his car and sped off. Apparently he was drunk and was demanding money and more beer. He ended up leading the cops on chase and was finally arrested when he put his car in a ditch. He pleading guilty and got 18 months.

The second incident is a bit more sketchy. I was at an event some years ago and someone said there were two cars circling the parking lot. Several of us went outside. I had my 1911 on me and when they made a pass by I made a point of showing that I was armed. The cars left and it was agreed by all to not report the incident.

I live in a rural area and can't count the number of times over the years I've gone out at night armed to check my property after hearing noises.

I lived in Jacksonville for 15 years and just moved from there a few months ago. Tons of friends in the area. Very sad.

By all accounts, it was because he lost the tournament. Also, environmental science people can be quite fanatical.

Also, it was not a big event. From what it was said in this thread, it basically took place in a game store in a mall, with maybe 100 people attending the event. You don't have security at these kinds of places.

Horrible tragedy that breaks my heart. Condolences to those that lost loved ones. I was just thinking of all of the tragedies of late and thinking about The Matrix movie storyline... I guess they were right, our peak of happiness seems to be the 90's. :/ It feels like it's gone all downhill since then. I don't remember many incidents like the ones of late in the 70's, 80's and 90's... although there were a few, nothing like the daily news horror shows that we have now.

Ehh not really the only nation this happens in france has had significant issues recently. And most of central america and Africa which has zones in near constant civil war...
when adjusting for different population sizes, analysing data between 2009 and 2015 (therefore excluding shootings like the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting and the 2017 Las Vegas shooting), the US falls to 12th in a comparison between the US and Europe.

Also while we have more we have fewer deaths...

Is there a summation of this somewhere? It's a lot of data to sort through.
it is an excel sheet you don't have too much to sort there are 102 entries
fatalities 838
injurys 1294
total 2132

SInce the context of the post was given around these during different centuries, I meant average deaths per century, or some such.

I don't remember if we ever got mass shootings anywhere in Europe. Mass shootings are definitely something that in 95% of cases happens in the US, nowhere else in the world. Americans are not crazier than the rest of the world. It IS because your gun control is a joke.

Your memory must be foggy. How can you possibly forget the massacre that claimed over 100 lives in France just a few years ago?!

Scale for per capita by country and the rate of mass killings compare to most of Europe isn't nearly as big as you claim.

Just as an example, France:

1985 - 7 shot to death
1989 - 15 shot to death
1992 - 7 shot to death
1995 - 16 beaten or shot to death
2001 - 4 shot to death
2002 - 9 shot to death
2012 - 7 shot to death
2012 - 4 shot to death
2015 - 12 shot to death
2015 - 5 shot to death
2015 - 150 killed when pilot crashed his plane
2015 - 130 shot to death
2016 - 86 crushed to death via truck
2018 - 4 shot to death

Keep in mind France has a population roughly 1/5th of that of the US.

'No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

Australians seem have no trouble killing large amounts of people without firearms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Australia

Congratulations, people are being burned to death instead of shot. Great progress there. /s

I always wondered why so many people are adamant against reforming gun ownership
I have to say I'm not really interested into getting into such discussions, but to me it seems every loony can get a gun in the US
Just seeing US police officers approaching any situation with a gun drawn makes me think I would never ever travel the US
Seems like a powder keg, getting worse over time too

To me, a non American, it seems strange that you have the NRA promoting guns to kids
View attachment 99514
, you can drive a car under 18, but you can't drink before 21

Seems like a strange mix
For some things you need a mature mind and for more deadly things you don't?
Yeah, and I still can't believe they let people buy butter knives and mopes in England. It's like the whole world is insane and careless!
