3TB GPT Drives "go RAW" Randomly in SAS Server

In addition to the LSI SAS 3000 Series, 8-port 1068E -StorPort controller I have an Intel ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO/5 Series/3400 Series SATA Raid controller in the same Z800 workstation. Should I connect the 3 TB drives to the Intel controller instead of the LSI SAS controller?
BTW, it does not take more than ~24 hours to fill a disk with >2 TB of data as I am copying the data from another machine with a big RAID array.
 
Given that the 1068E cannot handle > 2 TB discs (I don't know about the 3000 but probably has same limit), what choice do you have? Unless you get a new controller...
 
Which is why I bought an SAS2008 based controller, I just haven't been able to update the firmware past the 2TB only versions.
