3dmark06 score with 8800GT

Hey folks. Pardon my n00bocity, but I have a question about this thread (as you will tell, I'm definitely not as computer inclined as you guys are): Just how important is CPU performance in gaming? I was under the impression it's all how well your video card performed.

It depends on the game and what effects, etc. that is used.

There may not be that big a difference between a e6400 and a e6600, however, don't be fooled into thinking a 3800x2 is on par with a e6400 with gaming, etc.

The slower the CPU, the less frames it can process even when the GPU is spitting out a lot of frames.

just ran 3d mark again. and I fixed my OC because apparently the blend test in P95 didnt cut it.

390 FSB
8x Multiplier
Vcore 1.5125
Final processor frequency: 3.12 ghz.
DDR2-780 Mhz
8800GT Stock speeds

Passed 3d mark and I'm pretty sure it did the CPU low FTU test fine. I'll run it during school today. Had it at 400 x 8 but at 1.5125 Vcore it froze on P95, i'm not willing to go higher on the Vcore.

It _really_ depends on the game. For example, Supreme Commander performance scales up quite nicely with CPU power, as there are a lot of CPU calculations to perform, what with the large number of units. Most games are not so computationally intensive, however.

You're right, mostly. Generally, the graphics card is what limits your performance. However, with a mismatched pair (eg. slow CPU, fast GPU) upgrading the CPU will often have a greater effect than upgrading the GPU.

3DMark06 is far more CPU-reliant than the vast majority of games, and so gives disproportionate benefit to fast CPUs relative to what benefit you would derive in [most] games.

11204

Pretty typical, for a system whose CPU is running at standard, non-overclocked speed with main memory running 1:1 with CPU's FSB and GPU and video memory at factory set speeds...

Still, that's a big "improvement" over the 4000-ish score that I was getting from my previous 7800GT.

I always seem to get a low score even with what I think is a good rig.

C2D E6420 - OC to 2.395 GHz (can't seem to get above that without crashing - on stock cooler)
4 GB memory (Vista 32bit only recognizes 2.8 for some reason)
XFX Geforce 8800GT 640Mhz OC

3DMark Score 9844 3DMarks

SM 2.0 Score 4599 Marks

SM 3.0 Score 4866 Marks

As with my previous build, that seems pretty darn low for the parts I have in my pc. I saw where someone else had a score of 13000 with an 8800GT. Much better CPU but I wouldn't think that would make it 3000+ better.

I have 4 rigs in my house that have the e6420.. each one is OC'd to 3.4ghz.. Your processor is capable of MUCH more. Could be the motherboard.. could be the ram.. could be a re-seating of the CPU fan.. but make no mistake, your processor is capable of MUCH more!!!

oy vei, methinks it's plain to see where my next upgrade path lies-
