3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 Comes Back To Life Better Than Ever

Black PCB looks just right on a 3dfx card and the idea to add a molex connector for power instead of the 6000's power brick? Why didn't 3dfx itself think do that? 🤔 The 5500 ran off of molex

Maybe the weaker power rails were more of a concern back then? Less safety features in PSUs means even if most were safe (in operating parameters), the ones that weren't would fail catastrophically.

It was because PSUs of the time were typically 200-250W, and had the majority of their capacity on the 5v rail. The V5 6000 was a 50-60W card that used a 12v power source and would likely have either caused PSUs to explode due to the crap PSUs produced at the time, or at best be unstable.

Early Intel Bridge prototypes required the Voodoo Volts power brick, later HiNT Bridge variants had the ability to be powered internally via screw terminal mod or just soldering wires directly to the PCB.

If only he made an AGP version...

You know, why doesn't someone do this with the Voodoo5 AGP and PCI as well? I would buy an AGP card to use and put my original up to collect more value.
