34" 21:9 UltraWide Displays (3440x1440) - LG UM95/UM65 & Dell U3415W

Just ordered a um95 on amazon. I feel so dirty paying a grand for a monitor.

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I last dropped in on this thread. How is your experience with the UM95 and PC games? One of the main reasons why I got turned off by this monitor is due to the compatibility. But that was a long time ago when not many folks had this monitor, and I'm wondering how things are holding up now? Are most games compatible with this resolution? And if they are not, is it a real simple fix? I mostly play newer games, and I don't really bother with the classics.

Most games that gamers are playing today are compatible with this resolution. The only exception I've run into so far is The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

lol I hear ya. I saw one in person, and wasn't that impressed so I passed on the hype.
If I didn't see 120Hz gaming next to this monitor, I probably would have bought one myself.

What was so noticeably good about the 120hz gaming monitor that you liked over this?

Also, what kind of video card is recommended for this monitor?

For gaming, the smoothness of 120Hz @1440p was clearly noticeable over the choppiness of the UM95 @ 60Hz.
I saw a Qnix and UM95 side by side. That's the only way you can see for yourself. I bought the Qnix, I also liked the colors better.

This monitor came at the right time, where people wanted 4K but it was overpriced.
3440x1440 seemed like a deal at the time for $1000.

Now 2015 is upon us, 32-40" 4K 60Hz monitors will start hitting the market sub $1000.
I'll be more interested in a 2160p 21:9 version of this monitor in the future. But for gaming, a separate monitor like the Swift or Qnix is a must for me.

The games you play really determine what type of monitor you should get. Most of the games I play do not require me to have 120hz monitor so I don't really miss not having faster frame rate. I just don't like those types of games. I really love the widescreen for some games like civilization beyond earth, diablo 3, league of legends, and even stuff like guild wars looks great. Fallout 3, shadow of modor, metro are also nice to have that wide view and they aren't competitive so 120hz isn't necessary. I rarely play BF4 or titanfall so the monitor suits me more.

I have GTX 970 and with ultra settings most games hover around 40 minimum to 50ish fps average. This makes me want to get an Sli setup especially for future games that will be more demanding so if you are sensitive to microstutter then I recommend getting GTX 980 or faster single card to get 60 fps average.

Some stuff stretch to the resolution like nba 2k15. I really wish they would make it compatible because widescreen would make the game so much nicer seeing the full court. But games like this you won't really notice 120hz being different from 60hz since there isn't all that much movement.

I would agree with that. I play a lot of action games, FPS and Racing, that requires quick reaction.
I wouldn't touch any MMO or RTS game. Never interest me, but I can see how the wider aspect ratio helps.

For racing, it would be cool to have one of these 21:9 monitors @ 120Hz some day.
Many singleplayer games I play at 45-60fps just fine. I only get sensitive to fps during online gaming.

If only this was an ultrawide 21:9 1440p VA panel with 120 Hz G-Sync... Well, at least it would make my decision easily...

just a reminder to newcomers of wide resolutions/abnormal resolutions

download Flawless Widescreen - freeware program with lots of config fixes for games with poor support. best part is that it works very seamlessly and hassle free. If you're getting some weird scaling fixes with it, try going into settings and try disabling generic detection and bezel correction - FW was built mainly for surround, so some instances it might think 3440x1440 is a surround resolution and scaling it to a center monitor. disabling surround assumption/bezel correction fixes that

if Flawless Widescreen doesn't fix it, then the game engine probably just isn't going to work well with "abnormal" aspect ratios

For FW, I've heard some games with PB or VAC are banning people for hacks, is that still true?

With all the bad CostCo experiences on this thread, I took the risk of buying a 34UM95 from CostCo online this week since they have a good return policy. It paid off! It appears they have a September 2014 model that they are distributing and the panel looks perfect. There's no backlight bleeding and only IPS glow. The IPS Glow disappears whenever I move my head 5 degrees each way.

The box was only shipped in the original LG packaging. The box got minor damage when it was shipped. Got this in two days after placing the order on October 28. The only downside on this thing so far is the monitor stand. It sucks. It's time to get a Ergotron and a GTX 980 for some more testing.

Happy Halloween to all

Do you have pictures of the monitor you got that had backlight bleeding? I want to see how it is distinguished from ips glow. It is really hard to tell for me.

It's easy to determine. Here a quick explanation from others that I have heard on this forum.

IPS Glow is the light that illuminates the monitor coming from behind the front panel. The IPS glow will tend to disappear/appear as you move your angle of view. This is natural for IPS monitors. Look for example here as the camera man changes angles and lights disappear and appear on the edges:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoZLO7LwoBA

Backlight bleeding is a constant illumination of light at every angle of view when looking at the monitor. The light is radiating constantly from one source, usually from the monitor edge This example looks like there are night lights inside the monitor edges :

I'll just chime in and say that I had a 120hz panel prior to this monitor and though the extra smoothness and fluidity was very nice, it didn't take me long to adjust back to 60hz. A day or two later and I adjusted and didn't miss the poor colors and viewing angles of my 120hz TN panel.

I'd probably go 120hz again if/when it's available in a VA or IPS panel greater than 27" (if that's going to happen); otherwise I'm happy with my 32" BenQ VA and this LG until a 32-40" 4K is available, affordable, and well-reviewed.

Pros and cons. For me the extra size and immersion make up for the fluidity and response times that my 120hz monitor brought. Both are nice in different scenarios and it sucks that there isn't one monitor that has the best of everything.

Wow, great news. I ordered from Costco as well because of their return policy. Silly me didn't spend the extra $30 for expedited shipping and opted for the free ground shipping. Received word that I won't be getting mine until Monday,. At least I'll be able to clear off the old desk this weekend to get ready. It ended up shipping from CA and I'm all the way across the U.S. in NJ.

I looked into the Ergotron stand as well, but I don't think it will attach to my desk, as there is no space on the rear to clamp it to. I'm worried about the shipping hearing that it ships in only the original packaging, the UPS driver who delivers to my job has a history of mishandling and abusing packages.

It'll last you longer than your video cards. One of the better things to drop coin on imo.

No kidding. This is going to replace the three 24" (1920x1200) screens I am running now. Been running them since the 5850 came out.

I would like to replace HP ZR30w with the LG 34um95-p monitor. How does it look when playing ps4 games.

hey guys what do you think this is? I'll post the pics from diff angles. Im not sure if this is IPS glow or bleed.

Here's the problem with pictures: What we see here is almost as dependent on your camera and settings as it is on the monitor.

Also, remember that this is a very extreme test case for the monitor, and no monitor is going to be perfect.

Do you frequently find yourself viewing the monitor from extreme side angles in totally dark rooms while viewing near-black screens? If not, I wouldn't worry about that angle.

As for straight-on: Did you sense anything was wrong with the monitor during normal usage (e.g. web browsing on websites with dark backgrounds, dark games, movies, etc.)? That's the real question you should be asking yourself and basing your decisions on.

But to answer your question: Your pictures make it hard to tell, because it looks like the camera is working hard to make the screen appear much brighter than it actually is. Does the screen actually look that bright in the dark with a black screen to your eyes?

Yes, it looks like the iphone was overexposing the scene a bit. It oesnt look quite that horrible.

Honestly, I love this monitor an this blee/ips glow doesnt bother me much. Im just curious as to what it really is. I think it is IPS glow. I do see a litel bit of glow on the left corner when the room/screen is completely ark, but other than that, it doesnt really show.

huge thumbs up for the monitor though.

Hey guys, I have a question about this display and I hope someone has a knowledgeable answer:

Would a mini displayport source directly connected to the Thunderbolt port work?
Obviously, I'm not expecting it to work like a pure Thunderbolt connection to support daisy-chaining or highspeed bus, but would it work as a display?

Anyone care to try?

Thanks!

I posted this as a response for someone else. Examine it again after you watch these videos. It should help you determine the state of your monitor.

this was an excellent post, because way too many people are calling "ips glow" backlight bleed. this is a bright (too bright from the factory too, lower that setting right away), vibrant, high-end IPS panel, it's going to have some glow...but all this fear-hyping over backlight bleed has everyone running in panic because their expectations are clouded by this stupid backlight bleed terror

it's like the Ebola of monitors

thinking of jumping on the LG UM95 with the Ergotron MX stand as well

I prefer the sleek AOC design but since it has the same backlight bleed issues it is kinda lottery with both and apart from the stand there is nothing bothering me too much about the LG and the joystick menu looks like a better option then the classic buttons of AOC and stupid back buttons of the Dell

the curved LG is not available in my country yet and will be too expensive for me anyway. AOC messed up big time, should have been here 2 months ago and most likely will take another 2-3 months before it is in the stores

wanted to wait for a displayport 1.2a model but since I RMAd my 290 and got msi 970 it is kinda unsure if nvidia will support the freesync so no point waiting for something that I might never be able to use

I just hope getting another 970 will be enough for it (when clocked to 1500/1900), what are you guys running it on?

I have cf 290x on mine and am getting 88fps in shadow of mordor native res ultra settings. Pretty decent. I think sli should be sufficient.

Got my 34UM95 from Costco yesterday, had a chance to hook it up to my 2012 Mac Mini and looks amazing. In an ideal world I would've liked to gotten the curved version but when I saw that Costco had the flat version, I jumped on it. I didn't want to mess around with the lottery of getting a good copy from B&H or Amazon and having to ship the monitor back. Figured that if it was too big of an issue, I could just carry it into my local wholesale club. Had an issue with the resolution after updating the OS to Yosemite but a 10-15 work around online to see that it's a common issue and using the work around fixed it.

Either I'm not too familiar with what IPS glow is or my copy is rather pristine. I do see an ever so light glow when the screen is completely pitch black and only in the extreme corners, but under normal use I don't see anything. I was worried after seeing so many pictures in this thread of it, but mine is as good or better than the ones that I saw. I'll try and post some pictures later tonight.

Okay, so I found a solution to the Sleep Issue...for some of you at least. We want to use the displayport as it's the only "official" way to get 60hz to the monitor at it's native refresh rate. BUT, those of us with a GTX 970 and GTX 980 have an HDMI 2.0 port on our cards that can output more bandwidth than previous generation cards. All I did was hook up an HDMI cable into HDMI port 1 on the monitor and create a custom 3440x1440 60p signal in nvidia's control panel. Works without any issues and NO MORE SLEEP PROBLEMS.

Surprisingly, this actually seems to work
Does that mean that the monitor unofficially supports HDMI 2.0..?

shame for us 7-series owners

I'm tempted to try HDMI - debating if I could live with 50hz - but the sleep issues are so radically random for me. Sometimes it will go to sleep, sometimes it won't, but it's never consistent in it's manner for me....so for now I just deal with it

I think the only consistent thing I've noticed so far is if the PC shuts down/restarts unexpectedly, the monitor won't recognize incoming display on reboot and go to sleep again

oh well

Those of you with an older card that has a dual link DVI output, i'd invest into one of these badboys:

http://www.amazon.com/HDE-DVI-D-Dual-Female-Adapter/dp/B00DZOO2XO

I would imagine that would solve the issue as well.

The only thing I think we're losing out on here is the 10bit video through frame rate dithering if we use the HDMI input, but don't quote me.

It works for me too. And for anyone wondering it is full 4:4:4 chroma over HDMI

Have you tried making a custom resolution @60Hz with your card? Might work.

I've had all the same issues you're describing with my old GTX760 via DP, after switching to a 970 it actually got worse - hello "sleep-loop" (put PC to sleep and the screen just goes on-off-on-off indefinitely) and often the display would make the entire PC freeze when coming out of sleep for a couple of minutes.

Haven't seen any of those issues yet via HDMI, though.
