34" 21:9 UltraWide Displays (3440x1440) - LG UM95/UM65 & Dell U3415W

What OS are you running? Win 8.1 here.

Also are you running any apps when this happens like FRAPS or MSI Afterburner... they hook into the graphics card drivers and could potentially cause something like this. Just a thought.

Windows 8.1, latest drivers (though beta). I do have MSI Afterburner running but never had issues with it before. I'll try removing my GPU overclock and see if it stops.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the AOC and Dell units compare. I'm sure this review has been linked before in this thread, but this is what Digital Trends had to say about the LG. Of course the monitor gets great reviews elsewhere, so as usual it comes down to what you're used to and what you're willing to put up with. Everyone has different standards and bases for comparison.

Honesty, for me at least that linked review isn't THAT bad.
Here's what they listed as their lows...

Stand only tilts
High color inaccuracy for the price
Mediocre contrast and color gamut

They don't even address the biggest problems that are mentioned in this growing thread, namely light bleed, glow or whatever some are calling it.

On another note. As a fan of glossy screens how does everyone feel about the coating on this monitor? The LG website lists it as Anti-Glare3H. A google search brings up pros and cons. Opinions?

That review is somewhat of a joke... something seems to be wrong with their calibration unit, mine calibrated almost perfectly to 2.2 gamma, yet they say "We also noted a gamma reading of 1.8, which is way off the ideal of 2.2. " That is indeed way off and not normal at all. I haven't seen anyone get gamma readings like that with this monitor after calibration.

Contrast ratio... also way off, they report 560:1, typical after calibration with an i1 Display Pro is 850-900:1. This is typical of IPS and not mediocre at all.

On another note. As a fan of glossy screens how does everyone feel about the coating on this monitor? The LG website lists it as Anti-Glare3H. A google search brings up pros and cons. Opinions?

The coating is really light and not grainy like some other matte monitors. It almost looks glossy next to my old Dell 3008WFP.

Menu -> Settings -> DisplayPort 1.2 -> Enable

Thanks, I'll check when I get home tonight.

I'm pretty sure that I don't have this option available on my UM95.
I've gone through all of the menu settings a few times and haven't seen anything about "DisplayPort 1.2".

Strange.....

There will also be Philips ultra wide screen released in September. So even more goodness to choose from. I'd love also Samsung to join 21:9 race, but it seems they go either 4k or standard, and avoided that race.

Ahh, thanks, I forgot about the Phillips version. It will be interesting to see what Dell does with the AG coating on this monitor. I don't think it'll be nearly as aggressive as the U3011 but it sounds like LG did a good job in this area. I just wonder if the Dell will have issues despite them having a later release date and being able to "learn" from LG, as typically Dell's earlier Rev. monitors do have quirks that are (sometimes) fixed in later Revs.

Honesty, for me at least that linked review isn't THAT bad.

Perhaps their sample didn't have noticeable bleed (which, if true, means they most likely got a cherry-picked display!).

But I was referring more to the lackluster conclusion:

The new LG 34UM95 is priced like a flagship, but our tests show that performance doesn’t measure up with the MSRP. Aside from resolution, this display comes up short of its predecessor in every other area, as well as less expensive 16:9 displays. The 34UM95 is priced to compete with the best 27-inch 16:9 monitors from Dell and ASUS, but it simply can’t hang with that crowd.

That’s a shame, because the monitor is otherwise exceptional. Build quality is very high, the wide-format, thin-bezel panel looks futuristic, and connectivity options are plentiful. Ultimately though, none of this matters, since the display itself leaves something to be desired.

There’s really just one reason to buy the 34UM95; if you have a love for the 21:9 form factor.

I'm not that worried about it as I do believe that it will make me as happy as a school girl when I actually get it, but I guess I just wish that it was either priced lower or had no flaws at that price point.

I wouldn't say it's a joke, I'd say you didn't read closely enough. ;) See below.

And they didn't either. They measured gamma at 2.3 after calibration, which is way more on the mark than the pre-calibration settings that you noted. The monitor improved in several other areas, also.

So excited to join this club. It is hard to be patient. What's funny is that these 21:9 monitors hadn't been on my radar at all until recently when I stumbled upon someone mentioning the 34UM95 in their FS post for their 30" Dell. I started researching it and that was it for me! :)

I don't know if these LG's have backlight bleeding issues, but the Dell U3014 definitely has a big problem with it. Even the latest Dell rev (a04) still has severe backlight bleeding. I'm going to return mine and get something else. If it wasn't for the backlight bleeding, the U3014 would be a great monitor. The image quality looks amazing.
Just to be pedantic, the U3014 isn't backlight bleed, it's IPS glow. It's pretty serious when the monitor is at full black in a dark room and your head is centered, but otherwise it's mostly not noticable. In daily use I never notice it. I suspect the "bleed" with the LG is similar.
Here's a new update from the Massdrop discussion
Wow, if the Massdrop price is now only going to be $900, then there's no reason to wait for the drop. (Unless you really want a 3 year manufacturer's warranty.) Just order from B&H when it's at $899, which seems to happen at least once a week.

For me, 3 year warranty at the same price would kind of be a no-brainer, though. Plus there is hope that the units available on Massdrop will be new units with firmware updates that don't suffer some of these issues. I look for this to happen very soon...they are predicting to ship at the end of August so the drop would have to occur pretty soon in order for that to happen.

And of course by then maybe the AOC and/or Dell will be out. :)

FWIW, according to Massdrop [From talking to LG], the price of the 34UM95 will rise by $100 across the board at ALL the other retailers, which would make it $1K, thus making the 900 shipped with 3-year warranty Massdrop buy a significantly better deal.

From reading this thread, you could get the impression that the 34UM95 is a terrible monitor with a lot of issues and I don't think that is really the case. I would just like to say that my particular display is fantastic; it possesses excellent color and I am definitely a fan of the AG on this model. It makes the U2711 I'm coming from look like it was covered in wool, and it is hard to beat the 21:9 aspect for FPS/MMO gaming.

I still want the DP1.2 issues resolved (because, damnit, it should "just work"!), but it is not a show stopper and I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend, though I would tell them to wait and see how the AOC reviews turn out. It looks like the stand on the AOC is what the LG should have been.

It will rise for the 34UM94 sellers, not the 34UM95 retailers, who are already selling the product at that price ($900).

You sure about that? Quick Google search shows everyone [including B&H, FWIW] selling the 34UM95 for at least $999.
There wasn't a price increase, the original quote for the 34UM94 Massdrop received was wrong. The retailers with the 34UM95 have already been buying and selling them for a month plus now, their cost hasn't changed as far as we know. (And it wouldn't makes sense to raise the wholesale cost of a prduct after launch when it's been shipping for some time already.) I'm not sure, I'm speculating, but I'm confident in my conjecture.

We'll see how it plays out, I suppose. That $899 price from B&H [or anyone else] for the UM95 might be a thing of the past, though. Provantage, who had the UM94 listed for $830-ish several days ago, now list it for $930-ish.

Yeah, just noticed that ShopBLT raised their pre-order on the 34UM94 from $850 to $950.

So, if Massdrop also jumps to $900, I'm still not seeing the incentive to do a group-buy just to save $30 to $50.

From reading this thread, you could get the impression that the 34UM95 is a terrible monitor with a lot of issues and I don't think that is really the case.

I don't either. I think it's awesome if you are lucky enough to get one with minimal bleed and no glitches.

As far as DP 1.2, I agree with you that it should work, but I'm still waiting on a definitive answer regarding the benefit over having it disabled and not dealing with the glitches and corruption.

From PCmonitors.info:

"Users should be aware that properly using ’10-bit colour’ on monitors which do support it requires a very specific software and hardware workflow which most will not be using, so in some respects 8-bit + FRC is more accessible anyway."

So if there is a benefit to using DP 1.2 on this monitor aside from 10-bit color, which sounds like a non-issue anyway, I'm very curious as to what it is. If there is no benefit to having DP 1.2 enabled, yet it causes the issues described earlier in the thread, and disabling it resolves all of the issues that this monitor has except for BLB and there is nothing to be lost by having it disabled, then I don't think there's much to gripe about.

I do think that it should work, but it seems like such a huge fuss is being made about the DP 1.2 functionality when it might be all for naught. I've yet to find any posts indicating that the issues are present when DP 1.2 is disabled, and I'm good with that. :)

Keep in mind that competition from AOC and Dell could likely drive the price down a bit. LG is really the only player right now and they know that these are in high demand.

And also keep in mind that LG controls the supply and cost of their panels to AOC and Dell, so pricing could possibly change on those as well.

That might explain why pre-order pricing on the U3477Pqu has been all over the place in Europe.

I've had mine or order with B&H for a week or so now (at $899). Anyone know of anyone that has them currently in stock? I'd probably pay a premium just to get it in a bit sooner. Patience is not I virtue I possess.

There are 3rd party sellers on Amazon and Newegg, but they want $1,200 - $1,300. The stock seems to have dried up recently, almost as if those reports of them taking a break to sort out QC/other issue are true ;)

It is backlight bleed. The IPS glow being involved makes a bit more visible when you're sitting at your desk.

If it wasn't backlight bleed, then standing 20-25 feet away from the monitor wouldn't show the white areas in the bottom corners. The top corners are fine.

If you're using this monitor for watching videos or games, then the dark scenes will be really distracting.

So I ordered my lg 34um95-p through amazon on June 20th. Today I finally received an email from amazon stating that my monitor will be delivered Tuesday July 28th. So they are getting them and are filling the orders slowly. I can't wait. I'll let everyone know what version I have and how the bleed is. Hopefully there won't be any.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/lg-34um94-ultrawide-monitor

Massdrop has just now dropped the 34UM94-P and it's starting at $900. 6 days until final price is known.
This 34UM94-P still has a silver chassis, same stand, same monitor, just comes with a 3 year warantee.

Won't ship until Late August though.

Yeah, Sweden price has dropped ~€100 in the last couple of days.

But didn't AOC go out with a recommended price at £499?

Just a quick note - I installed the OSX Yosemite Beta on my machine earlier, and fired it up with the 34UM95 attached. In Displays, I wasn't able to change the resolution above 2560 x 1080 and the Refresh Rate field was greyed out (set to 60hz NTSC).

I ended up restoring to a full backup I took before installing the beta, so thought i'd post this info here in case it saves someone the time and hassle.

OH SNAP, the moment I've been waiting for.

So the question you have to ask yourself is...do you jump on this knowing that it won't ship until late August and that AOC and Dell still have time to work on and release their versions?

The sucky thing is, by the time we start reading about experiences with this UM3494, it'll be too late to get one! So if it's awesome and you bit, you lucked up. If it has the same issues, I doubt Massdrop's return policy is nearly as awesome as Amazon's...

Hmm, well 6 days to decide.

I haven't done a detailed examination of the problem since I got mine last fall, but I seem to remember it going away if I shifted my head to the bottom corners. Now I need to check when I get home.

It's the same monitor as far as I can tell from the Massdrop description, just with the extended warranty. (Case color is the same.)

I'm thinking it's not worth it. You're only saving $20, you're waiting over a month for shipping (to be fair you may be waiting on stock elseswhere anyway), and you can't return it. For this you gain 2 years of warranty. Sometimes Massdrop is an awesome deal, this time it seems worse than buying from a regular store, unless you're 100% sure you're not going to want to return it, in which case you get more warranty and spend less money.

Yeah, most press releases stated £499, though some more recent ones are now stating ~€900.. even with direct conversion and including VAT, those prices aren't even in the same ballpark.

The monitor will be available starting in September at a recommended price of 889 Euros (VAT included).

So the question you have to ask yourself is...do you jump on this knowing that it won't ship until late August and that AOC and Dell still have time to work on and release their versions?

Yeah, the lowest possible Massdrop price on the UM94 is $879 (given 100 orders). Even putting the Dell and AOC aside, it's also entirely possible that the price on the UM94 and UM95 could drop to $800 by late August (or the UM94 could go back to it's original $830 price at Provantage and ShopBLT).. then you've waited an entire month locked into a price that's considerably worse.

Seems more like a gamble, than a great deal imo.

According to massdrop's recent dealings/quotes with LG, that initial $800 price was quoted wrong and it's now $900, per LG. This is apparently going to affect all sellers of these panels, not just massdrop. So basically LG is raising the price on this panel by $100 and this will affect all retailers of this, UM95 and UM94.

So any seller you see currently listing these for under $900 hasn't readjusted their price. Once LG raised the price on them, they will raise the price on us.

Long story short, massdrop is most likely still going to be the least expensive price on these panels.

I know provantage had it listed for $832, but I just checked and it's now at $932. That AOC initial quote of around $850 probably won't come out that low now, expect 900-950 on that. I'd personally rather have a product and get LG's support vs AOC's support.

The very nature of how massdrop works usually grants a lower price than others can do.

I know purchasing monitors in CA will cost you both sales tax and a waste/recycle fee. I didn't see Massdrop charging it on order summary. Do internet sales charge a monitor waste/recycle fee or is that at a CA store only thing?

Yea, you get it anywhere local you're going to be getting an older panel with possible issues, or you're going to be paying $1000 plus tax. Costco doesn't have them anymore and Fry's will ding you for $1080 out the door. But yes, you do pay that extra $180 for peace of mind of being able to return it within 15days for any issue.

If these massdrop models have a problem, you take it up directly with LG, not with massdrop, but you are getting a cheaper price than anywhere else. It's really just the age old decision of: "order it online or get it in store". Same with massdrop here. Get it online from amazon, you're gonna pay more for it and would still have to go through the hassle of returning it if a problem.

I'm putting my faith in this specific big massdrop order having no issues. I'm banking on the fact that LG will handle this bulk order better and these panels will probably have been made in June/July, so hopefully the firmware for DP 1.2 was fixed and they've corrected any bleeds.

The last few posters all raise some good points. So those that managed to buy early at $899 from B&H or Adorama (or less from ProVantage and ShopBLT in the case of the 34UM94) not only got in at among the lowest price this will be, they didn't have to wait and have been enjoying it. By the same token, anyone who bought the 34UM95 only received 1 year of warranty and I'm hoping that the units that Massdrop will be shipping won't suffer from the issues that affected early batches.

The more I think about it, the less I'm tempted to wait on the AOC because release date is still unknown and the price may not be significantly less. Who knows though; those units may ship with less issues than the LG. Ugh!

My main dilemma now is do I buy a 34UM94 from Massdrop and get a 3-year warranty and what's likely to be the best price for a while, or pay $100 more when Amazon gets it back in stock and have hassle-free returns? Now THAT is a nice little $100 gamble.

That's being dangerously optimistic. Awesome if that were the case, but I'm not sure I'm that lucky. ;)

Also, if these end up being made in July or August they may very well be better and/or fixed, but AFAIK people were still having DP issues with June panels.

I wouldn't say it's a joke, I'd say you didn't read closely enough. ;) See below.

And they didn't either. They measured gamma at 2.3 after calibration, which is way more on the mark than the pre-calibration settings that you noted. The monitor improved in several other areas, also.

True, it was late when I skimmed through that, sorry. Still, the contrast ratio and deltaE recordings they got were far off from mine (and other user recordings I've seen in this thread).

I used the same brightness target and got a 846:1 for contrast, average dE of 1.10

uTW.jpg

In comparison they recorded 500:1 for contrast with a dE of 2.58.

Adorama ans Bh do not charge tax for people in CA. However if you are a costco member, i recommend that route.

Well I don't know why, but my UM95 does not have a DisplayPort 1.2 option in settings.

Tried resetting the display, but no dice... :(

This isn't going to affect the 95 as far as I can tell. (Though it's conjecture.) You can't mis-quote a price on a product that's already been purchased (and sold) by retailers. The mis-quote applied to the 94 only. Notice the price has only risen at the business supplier sites with the 94, not any consumer websites like Newegg or B&H that sell the 95.

Very strange, when did you get yours? Wonder if new units are shipping with a different firmware.

EDIT: see from earlier in the thread you are connected using DP. Strange. Thought maybe you were using some other connection method, and as a result the DP settings were not listed. As in the DP settings [or HDMI-related settings, etc] are only visible in the menu when the monitor is connected with those particular cables.
