34" 21:9 UltraWide Displays (3440x1440) - LG UM95/UM65 & Dell U3415W

I ended up going with the LG 34UM95-P. Time to go video card shopping!

Make sure the video card doesnt have issues with DP. Because this monitor only supports HDMI 1.4a so you'll be using DP if you want anything greater than 50hz at native res and 10bpc. My 290s has issue with the DP cable being heated up by the exhaust and caused massive flickering and constant black outs so I had to go out and buy another video card.

My screen would suddenly go black and then a few seconds later it would be back to normal. I think there was a click sound when this happened. This would happen randomly, sometimes every day or a couple of times a day or many days apart. Changing the monitor to DisplayPort mode 1.1 has completely eliminated the problem.

Thanks. I will change it to 1.1 see if the issue will be fixed.
In the meantime, do you think is this monitor issue or graphic card?
I am getting a new PC, wondering if with new graphic card this can be fixed.

I think it must be a monitor issue because too many owners have this problem with different graphics cards. If it could be fixed by a firmware update I wish Dell would issue one, but maybe such a fix is not possible. Who knows.

I just did the video card shopping too. 390X will be here tomorrow. I went with the Dell U3415W because I really wanted the curved screen.

I can definitely see the benefit of a curved screen for something this wide, but paying nearly $300 more than what I spent didn't seem worth it. Here's a quick picture of my setup.

That looks awesome. How are you liking it so far?

So far it is freaking awesome! I got basically unnoticeable backlight bleed (bottom left) which is only noticeable when doing tests for it. No dead pixels, Pictures are vibrant. I'm also pretty happy it seems I don't have to rush to buying a new video card since all I am is playing is CS:GO. With my 650 TI Boost I'm getting 60-100 fps with everything maxed out including AA at 2560x1440 which is perfectly fine with me. Going to watch some movies later on and see how it goes, but so far quick viewings show them filling out this wonderful ratio to perfection with Plex.

Very nice surprise! How's your panel?

It seems pretty good so far. I haven't calibrated it at all. Just lowered the brightness. I went from a 28" TN to this IPS display. So it's quite a bit different. I've been waiting to play AC: Rogue for awhile. Seemed like the perfect time to start. Downloaded a hack off wsgf.org to get the aspect ratio right. Seems like a lot of older games need them. The experience of playing on something this wide is incredible.

Very nice setup! The Dell U3415W looks like it has a much better stand than mine, but I lucked out because it works perfectly for me. I came off a Dell 2408WFP which was finally starting to show its age. It's pretty cool that this much larger monitor draws the same or less power.

I can drop in as an owner of aoc u3477pqu. I in all honesty think its pretty much the same monitor as LG, just different OSD... I'm very happy about it but display port 1.2 is enabled by default and I do get a horizontal line across the screen once in a blue moon (~once a week actually) but thats it – no black screens, no screen sleep bugs etc. Overall I'm very happy about this monitor (apart from it not having external power supply, I seriously favor external power supplies over internal because I can actually change them when they die).

Generally speaking there's no point calibrating the U3415W; the factory calibration is that good. The story with the LG and AOC models is vastly different -- they should be calibrated first thing out of the box.

I'm pretty happy with the stock calibration. I'm still playing with brightness/contrast, though.

Seems prices are continuing to drop, newegg has the Dell for $699 right now with an additional $20 off

Is this because they are trying to move the '15 inventory and make way for the 3416's or are we going to see another heavy price adjustment in our favor soon?

Didn't realize the Dell had built in speakers till just now, how are they as far as sound & quality are concerned? Is it still best to go with separate speakers?

They were over priced to begin with. It could be they are trying to move out inventory for something newer but more likely production has the supply chain full now. Watch and see if the stores jack up the price when they run out or quickly restock. That should tell us something.

Need a little advice. Below I have a picture of my current setup which includes the Acer XB270HU Gsync monitor and a smaller 23" Asus monitor. My TV is an 54" LG OLED. I play all my consoles as well as a majority of controller based PC games in Steam Big Picture on the Oled and games like Marvel 2015,Diablo and Heroes of the Storm which require mouse and keyboard I use my Acer.

I really would like to switch to a one monitor solution because having two takes up so much space and I think I would benifit more from the aspect ratio on the PC games I play with mouse and keyboard.

If I did get a widescreen it would be the Dell U3415W but I would have to sell the Acer to afford it and I'd be losing Gsync. What would you guys do? (I know about the Acer X34 but I cant afford that).

Just a note: HotS doesn't support 21:9 resolutions.

That totally depends on you and your preferences. If you can't afford a large high Hz monitor with G-Sync then there are two distinct camps: those who value speed over size and those who value size over speed.

I'm in the latter group. I'd much rather have 40"+ 4K running at 60Hz than use a 27" 144Hz+ with G-Sync.

The clear compromise right now are the 34" ultrawide panels with variable refresh rate, but if you can't swing one of those then continue to save up or deal with the compromises of one of the others. That's about all you can do at this point.

That's what I have right now, the X34 and EC9300 OLED. It's a great combo, I recommend just waiting for the X34 to drop in price - I reckon it will happen in 3-4 months.

I'll have my U3415W in a few days and have a question for you current 21:9 owners. Is there a way to set the position of a wallpaper on the screen? I don't see any settings in Windows 10 that allow that. I have a collection of 4k wallpapers and want to fit the width of the wallpaper to the screen and then move the wallpaper up or down to center it where I want it.

Easy enough to get a free image editing program and just crop it however you want.

They're typical monitor speakers. I wouldn't use them unless I didn't have any other option. :)

I have a somewhat similar setup to you. I was mainly a console gamer but Just Cause 3 pissed me off with the slowdowns and load times. Playing games on the ultrawide is a MUCH better experience than playing on a larger TV. But only if the game properly supports 21:9 (or a hack has been released for it). I have PS4, XO and AppleTV hooked up to the TV.

Please clarify 1 thing for me please. I really get confused with resolution of monitors. So 27 inch 2560 X 1440p (16:9) will show the same resolution as 34 inch 3440×1440p (21:9) height wise? I have a 27 inch 1440p monitor, deciding to get 34 inch ultra wide screen 1440p monitor, But the height of the monitor is little shorter than my current montitor. Why they couldnt just keep the same height in the ultra wide screen monitor. Probably a stupid question. but little explanation would help me understand.

In my experience, these ultrawides are the same exact height as most 27" 2560x1440 displays. Any difference in height would really be down to the thickness of the bezel.

you are probably right... but i guess i will measure the screen height size of both monitors excluding the bezel.

My Dell U3415W monitor measures 370 mm (14.57 in.) in total height. The top bezel = 10 mm (0.39 in.) and bottom bezel = 25 mm (0.98 in.) so the actual displayed image is 335 mm (13.19 in.) tall.

its about right.. this image is from my Asus pb278q 1440p monitor. Thank you for clarifying. I guess the bezel makes a big difference.

Oh...no. It just happened again.........even though I have disabled DP 1.2.....
SO ANNOYING!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I wonder could it be the reason that my room temperature is too high which might cause the monitor overheats and cut off the power by itself..? Because I live on 2nd floor and the sunlight gets to my room in the afternoon.

You have two choices: contact Dell and see if they will replace your monitor or switch to HDMI.

I used my U3415W for a few days and was unimpressed with it, so I returned it. Next to my U2515H the picture was very dull and lifeless. I couldn't find a contrast/color setting that came near matching the contrast and color reproduction of my U2515H. I think it was the lower max brightness and lower contrast that makes it look dull compared to the U2515H. I always keep brightness at max, which is 350 on the U2515H compared to slightly less than 300 on the U3415W.

That's crazy. I have my brightness down to 7/100. Anything higher than that feels like I'm staring at the sun.

That is interesting. Do you increase brightness when viewing movies or playing games? I can understand turning it down if one is doing color-critical work and want to have a good calibration, but I spend most of my time playing games, watching movies, and writing code.

I don't experience any discomfort with max brightness, even using it in a dark room. I do use bias lighting to help with perceived black level, though.

Edit: With my U2515H I don't get the dull look when I turn down the brightness to 75%, which should be around what the U3415W is at max brightness. I'm still curious what the difference is that made it look dull to me. Even on the same settings it just didn't look very vibrant.

Do you have a colorimeter? Maybe the U3415W is more accurate? Sometimes accurate colors can look duller, if you are used to oversaturation.

My experience with these ultrawides is that the color is very good out of the box, my LG needed minimal adjustment and same with my X34.

Edit: I use my displays at 120cd/m2, which was about 30% brightness on the LG. It's almost too bright for me in a dark room, I can't imagine over 50%... but everyone's eyes are different.

No, I leave it at that for everything. It really hurts my eyes if I go brighter.
