I'm trying to make my system quieter so I was thinking about running my 3 case fans at 7V using the "7V trick". Should I be worried about what this could do to my PSU? Is there anything else to be wary of?

I've got 1x 120mm (rear) and 2x 92mm (front), both Nexus, running off a Seasonic X-650.

edit: nevermind, I'll use a resistor. I'd delete the thread if I could. x)

You won't have any issue running three fans with the 7V trick. But I guess that's too late to help ...

Make sure you use a resistor with the proper rating... :) I'm sure you know this, but your normal, run-of-the-mill 1/4 watt will burn up :)

Did a quick search.

Basically you pull the positive from a 12v source and use a +5v line as the ground?

edit
Yea that's how it's done, volt meter confirmed it. Hmm

You can get even spiffier voltages.

12v to 5v = 7v
12v to 3v = 9v
12v to -5v = 17v!
IIRC there's a -12v line too... You know what that means.

Bear in mind that the -5V and -12V lines are not rated for much current--usually less than 1A apiece.
