Been waiting for this deal to come back! Thanks

My 8-bay Synology is full of these, but my backup nas only has 4x 8TB reds and is full.

Will get these to populate the backup nas, which should tide me over until the new Synology models come out

I got those a couple of weeks back. Needed more Plex space. Glad to see it's still going.
Mine were Reds tho...

Might get another two in Gold this time

If you just need some cheap drive with a warranty, ebay has companies with refurbs in the <$8/TB range if my memory serves me right.

I just got 2 Seagate EXO 18TB drives for roughly $9.69/TB manufacturer recertified with a 2 year seller warranty from serverpartdeals.com and couldn't be happier. Drives are running wonderfully in my NAS after running them through the pages and no bad sectors found after being zeroed out and scanned for bad sectors.

$16.07/TB is just wild to me.

I don't really need it I have a 6tb gold right now, but I want some room to save recordings for 30 days instead of 12.

It is a little pricier than some other options but I like it for a few reasons.
It's a new enterprise drive with a solid 5 year warranty.

It's for my second NAS and matches the capacity of my primary NAS. Next time I have space constraints I will upgrade the NAS instead of the drives and add 4 more.

So it's part of a long term strategy for me

...$450 for 28TBs of brand-new, server-grade storage seems wild to you? Really?

I had two 12TB drives I bought from ServerParts this summer. They were both deployed in 2018 - so SIX YEARS powered on. Both had bad sectors when I finally got around to running a long SMART on them.

Used drives with reseller warranties are generally an excellent deal. But never forget you're still buying a VERY used drive with no manufacturer backing.

I've seen well used 10TB for around $5/TB in certain places, but those are a bit of a gamble in terms of being perfect and how long they'll last. Still shouldn't matter for a dvr/nvr since the drive is on 24x7 and should be just like how it was in the data center.

I'm not a fan of refurbished drives and the gold series has treated me well. I guess I'll wait for another sale, lol

All of my drives are from Goharddrive. I bought 14TB Enterprise drives for about $95 bucks each and 5 year warranties. Since I run a Raid 6, when one dies, I replace it with a spare, email goharddrive. New return label is emailed to me and I send it back and then they ship me another one. I never have down time and I do not pay full price for a new drive that could also fail too.

Gold is definitely some of the best of the best--consumer twin of the enterprise top of the line sata drive. I definitely understand the 'no need to fix what isn't broken' stance. :)

The weekly sale is on the model WD141KRYZ showing as clearance, where as on the normal site, the 14TB is WD142KRYZ. Any idea what the difference is?

Thinking of getting 2 bundles to replace 8 of my eight year old 4TB seagates.

Best Buy had (didn't catch color) similar 14TB drives for $249.99.

Just a guess: hardware revision

I just don't get why someone would buy these when you can get 4-5 HC530 14tb refurbs for the same price. The refurbs have gone through the bell curve for failure, and you get double the redundancy. Plus the two big refurb companies offer solid 5 year warranties.

I mean if you are using them for critical business purposes then sure but for home use... I don't see it.

4-5? You mean 3.3? They're $130~ ea.

2 new for the price of 3.3 used seems like a pretty sound tradeoff. Especially when the Golds are a cut above the Ultrastars in the first place.

I don't get why people buy refurbished drives, but it isn't my money and I don't care how people spend their money.

Regularly on sale for $95. So 4.7 for the price of 2.

It's too bad you can't use both! WD website voids the combo discount when using Rakuten
I had it active when I checked out and it didn't cost me the bundle - though I didn't see my usual Rakuten confirmation email afterwards.

However, I just went into the Rakuten app and reported the transaction - went right through.

I think there just comes a point where the savings isn't worth the potential hassle to you anymore - as with most things there's probably an intersection point of income/age/frugality that shifts.

For this much data? I can handle another Benjamin or so.

I would compare the spec sheets--if there's any obvious difference it should be there.

I don't think Best Buy carries Gold. They're a top of the line product that most of their customer base won't shell out MSRP for.

That would be my guess too. I would think maybe some speed improvements too, but probably not something they put on the spec sheets it was so insignificant.

Speaking of speed, it is quite impressive that these drives can transfer 250MB+/sec peak. This means a single drive can nearly saturate 2.5Gb in ideal conditions, and easily saturate 1Gb in probably even less than ideal conditions.

For me, it's because I don't have the time to deal with failures. The best drive is one that fail less when you don't have time to deal with failures, and hence is worth paying more.

The HGSTs are basically the same as the Golds with the same duty cycle and mtbf and performance. The difference is that used has got some miles on them. Sometimes that's a good thing (backups of backups or hyper redundant live data), but other times having a 'fresh' drive just feels more sound.

They're not even refurbished really, just wiped and tested. But if the warranty is the same and the price is far less, it's just a better value. You'd be surprised sometimes how much cheaper used stuff is than new.

I ran two of the helium-Gold 16s in RAID-0 for a while and was getting 550MB/s. I had to pinch myself at SATA SSD level speeds from spinners. They made for a very decent game install-barge.

Nice! I wonder if you can just report the transaction like you did and get it that way.

The reason I think it was so easy was because Rakuten remembered the session ID they assigned my shopping visit and the date I entered in aligned perfectly. So price, date and shopping session ID all reflect now.

Yep, hard drives have come a long way and keep getting faster while SSDs are just interface limited. It will be an interesting day when hard drives are also interface limited. Seek times on SSD will always win, but for bulk data storage hard drives have led for a long time. Still there's also the form factor limit where SSDs are already at 30TB in 2.5" in the used market--a size currently no hard drive can match.

I was looking at the refurb/recertified ones, but being in Canada, think will get them from WD directly.
Warranty from the US resellers might be a hassle and too expensive to ship.
Dont know if manufacturer certified ones from the US will be covered in Canada.

Since a lot of these companies have storefronts off ebay, I would just call them direct and ask.

Only difference I can see, but i dont think it means anything, is that the newer version shows this:

Recording Technology - CMR
Endurance (TBW) - 550TB/year

But they are blank on the older version
I can't see Golds being anything but CMR, so they probably just added that because they were getting questioned.
