Screaming Villains has finally released the Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition. Previously corrupting our youth 25 years ago on the Sega CD, the game is out again for only $15 on both the PC and PS4. Tyler Hogle, the lone developer was able to get the masters from the director James Riley and recreate the game without the long-forgotten original source code. Players take the role of a member of the Special Control Attack Team (SCAT) who's sole job is protect five teenage girls from terrorizing intruders during their weekend slumber party. Get some friends over this Friday, it's time to party!

You curious folks can check out the C-Span hearing (includes bonus description of Mortal Kombat footage).

Night Trap was developed over six months in 1987, with a budget of $1.5 million and 16 days spent shooting 35mm movie footage. But Hasbro canceled the Control-Vision in 1989. Night Trap got a new lease on life thanks to the Sega CD a few years later, which could handle its video-based gameplay.

Played it back in the day and wouldn't say it was great, but was mildly entertaining and at times a bit corny.

Watching the video made me feel old. :(
I was 8 when I played it back in the day. I had the entire thing mapped out on paper when all the events were happening.

had a sega cd and enjoyed the shit out of this game as a kid. I had the original version before congress forced the maker to re-release it with some of the more "violent" scenes removed.

It was like 2 scenes lol. That Congress heads would of exploded if they saw any of our modern games like GoW 3 and GTA 5. Hell show them how take MK 1 looks compared to 10

I hope yall got in on the limited run because it sold out in under 15 minutes for both runs. Got my copy in the first batch, but in the 60 seconds or so it took to finish the purchase it went from 50% gone to Sold Out

Yea, it took way too long for me to go through the Kleenex. I thought Lieberman said this was porn?

The whole hearings on this were absurd. The people attacking it had not even played it and were just going by what other people (who likely didn't play it) were saying as well.

The game is rated Teen, and it wasn't even nearly as graphic as Mortal Kombat.

Actually, Night Trap was originally rated MA-17 under Sega's own rating system, prior to the formation of the ESRB. MK was MA-13, so even Sega rated Night Trap as worse than MK. Likely due to the "suggestive sexual content". Because, you know, ripping someone's head off is fine for kids to see but oh no, not something that wouldn't even qualify as softcore porn, that kind of vile sin cannot be allowed.

Also, you can thank Nintendo for a lot of the BS in that hearing. They feed into the senator's fears by attacking Sega and painting them as people that would sell the most vile things imaginable to children with no regard. And, of course, they painted themselves as white knights, protecting the children.

I know that , I was talking about this re-release, it's rated Teen, which should show you how over-active they were over the whole thing.

Wait $15? They charged me $35 plus shipping for mine, what the hell?

It was a different time. Back then no one really considered that adults or older teens would play video games, it was all a thing for young children. The original MK is tame compared to some games we see now. Game ratings have kind of gone the opposite route that movies have, while the MPAA has gotten more strict and anal about what is and is not a R movie, the ESRB has (mostly) adapted to the changes in the market and the playerbase and adjusted both the T and M ratings to better fit the times.
