Almost got enough cash stashed away for a new monitor but having trouble deciding on which way to go.

At first I was wanting a 27 but am kinda worried it'll be too big since I sit less than 3 feet away from my screen. At that distance I'm afraid it'll not only make me sea sick but that the pixels could be too big and look like crap.

So I was thinking of a 1920x1200, 24". Still more screen real estate than my current budget Acer, higher resolution for better PQ and would be a better match for pixel vs screen at 30" away.

I'm going to spend $300 and there are some good choices of both formats at this price.

So what do you guys think? I'm leaning towards the 24.

I use a Viewsonic 27" 1ms 16:9 and sit pretty close myself, and I don't have any issues at all with pixel size. Plus, not all games are written for 16:10 so you'll get black bars and a reduction in view.

In short, go with the 27.

I play quake 3 and quake 3 mods for the most part in which the usage of a non-standard resolution is as easy as editing a configuration file. With this in mind, having more vertical viewspace with a high fov makes a huge difference when you're playing on a map that requires you to work vertical differentials extensively. Flicking your aim to near-zenith is a lot easier when you can see your target!

It depends on your usage, I'd say.

the format is not different for games.
27" and low resolution = aliasing in games.

The aspect ratio is very important for games

The only reason why 24" 1920x1200 got some votes in this poll is because owners of such monitors cant handle the truth. Seriously it would be very stupid to choose 24 inch 1920x1200 over 27 inch 1920x1080 for gaming.

Only you can answer that question. I have a 24 inch 16:10 and find it great all round monitor. Buy from a shop which has a good return policy and try both types. Personally I prefer PC gaming 1900X1200. But Console gaming is all 1920X1080.

Yes, I agree. Go with the 27. Bigger and 16:10 is no good for gaming.

Yes and no.

There are some games like SC2 that will give you slighty better viewing angles for 16:9.

But I would always take a higher res because eventually the game will be shut down and you will be reading a forum or a website and doing something productive and the 16:10 ratio just gives you more screen space period.

If all you are gonna do is game and don't care for anything else why not just but a 16:9 37-42inch TV and use that as a computer monitor :p

Both will look pretty craptastic when viewing text but for gaming you get what you want.

Looks like the 24" is preferred so far.

I do a lot of gaming but I also do a lot of web browsing, reading, shopping, forums and the occasional photo edit so the extra resolution does appeal to me. Wish there was a Microcenter nearby so I could actually see first hand.

You need some seriously high end hardware to run new games at 2560x1440 with good detail settings. Personally I'm not willing to endure the ongoing expense of keeping my system updated with high end parts, so I stick with my 24" 16:10 monitor.

16:10 usually are VA or IPS panel and have a much better quality than TN.

16:10 is not good if u use a console like ps3 or xbox360 ( noobs hardware ) or some films recorder.
but if u use the pc u will not have any problems.

Flamebait aside, I use an Xbox 360 with my 16:10 monitor with no issues. I don't have a problem with black bars when they serve to prevent distortion/stretching.

some games will benefit from 16x9, some not. depends on the fov. some people prefer the added width of 16x9, some prefer the added height of 16x10. it's all a matter of opinion.

Proper HD 1080p / 720p aspect ratios with no black bars & larger screen = I'd go with the 27" easily especially if you're around 2 1/2 - 3 feet away from it.

I don't understand how 16:10 has problems in games. I've been gaming on my 16:10 22" for over a year and a half now and haven't noticed any problems. Yeah the cut scenes have black bars but actual gameplay does not. Am I missing something?

Varies by game. Some games have a fixed vertical fov, so a 16:9 is the same vertical fov and a larger horizontal fov, which is better (I think sc2 is like this). Others have a fixed horizontal fov, so 16:9 reduces vertical fov. I am not sure which games are like this, but it is worth looking into if there are a few favorite games you have.

I picked the the 27" 1920x1080 since dot pitch isn't such a big deal for gaming and bigger is definitely better in terms of monitor size.

That said for literally everything else the 24" 1920x1200 is a better choice and I would highly suggest you pick that unless you intend to use the display exclusively for gaming and video.

Which is absolutely false.

16:10 = problems while gaming. Doesnt matter if it is console or computer games.

just two examples

Have to admit, this got me thinking. With developers catering more and more to consoles and PC's becoming more and more an afterthought, it really wouldn't surprise me if they start going 16:9 exclusively. If for no other reason than "just in case" I'm thinking the 27 would be the way to go now. Fuck a bunch of black bars. I ain't spending all my spare cash on pc parts and games so I can play with black bars and give up a couple inches of screen real estate.

That FOV example you supplied doesn't really apply since both of the resolutions he is choosing from have the same exact width and the only difference is the height.

Personally I'd rather have the higher resolution and I feel that 16:9 is too wide for computer use. I have a brand new laptop with a 16:9 screen and I just feel like I would be better served with some more vertical space.

Yes, I would say that it is likely that the majority of games will be 16:9 exclusive within a few years.

When some game developers choose not to support 16:10 today although 40 percent of all gamers have 16:10 resolution on their monitors you can only guess what the game developers will do in three years when maybe around 10 percent of the gamers will have 16:10 resolution. It is easier and cheaper for the game developers if people buy 16:9 monitors instead of that they have to deal with different aspect ratios.

Seems like they're already trying to phase out 16:10. On Newegg right now there are 183, 1920x1080 monitors but only 21, 1920x1200. Factor in 1680x1050 and that's only 29 more. 16:10 monitors look to be going the way of 4:3 monitors.

16:9 if you want a more multi-purpose monitor. If you plan on mostly doing PC related tasks and not movies/gaming, then go with 16:10.

That's really sad.

That's really sad.

I agree its sad but they have just pushed 16:10 to expensive models.

The mass market gets to deal with 16:9 TN goodness lol.

They will never get rid of 16:10 because in an office environment vertical screen space > watching movies!

One game by lazy developers doesn't really mean shit.

Thats true but like I said, when you look at the current trend of developers shitting on PC gamers, this is just gonna get worse.

It wouldnt be so bad if it were some average budget game that nobody really knew about so you could tell yourself they needed to cut cost by only using 16:9, but Assassins Creed 2 was a big budget blockbuster release that was really anticipated. If a big time release like that will completely shit all over PC gamers, then its gonna start happening more often.

I bought AC2 a couple weeks ago but hadnt fired it up yet (too addicted to Mass Effect) but got curious from Oled's post and fired it up and fully patched it has the black bars on my 16:10, 22" and there is no option to get rid of them so Im essentially losing 2" of screen real estate. I aint havin' that.

So that pretty much settles it for me. Looks like Ill be rolling with a 27". Pretty sad state when you have to factor in game developers complete disregard for PC gamers when buying a monitor.

So thanks guys for the input and thanks Oled for bringing up an angle I never even considered.

I've had the U2711 2560x1440 and now the U2410. Both are similar in height, the U2711 is wider.

I would buy a 24" 1920x1200 before a 27" 1920x1080. Sharper picture and more vertical pixels.
Unless you're getting a U2711, the 24" is the best choice.
