OK I got this 20gb ibm travelstar laptop drive free from a friend and it's formatted into 16kb clusters, I tried to install windows 2000 on it and it couldn't load ntldr on startup so I put win98 back on it and it works fine, Also the install works ok on an old 500mhz emachines so it's not the cd, the laptop also supports the full 20gig and not the 8gb limitation.

BTW the hdd is one 19.8gb partation on fat32

I know fat16 uses 16kb clusters some of the time on my older drives under 2gb, but fat32?

It doesn't have any of the large drive fixes easydrive.. etc.

I read here: http://forums.aliensoup.com/archive/index.php/t-6985 but by 40gig was fat32 and using 4kb clusters in one partation till I ntfs'ed it.

Symantec has the GDISK tool that comes with Ghost. Use it to rewrite the master boot record and wipe partitions.

gdisk <drive> /mbr /wipe

Ok I got it fixed, what I did was put in my main rig and format it to ntfs then installed win2k. Notebooks a speedy dude now with win2k :)
