16x drive/media only burns at 4x?

I bought 2 identical ASUS DVD drives(which in retrospect was a bad idea) which are advertised as having a 22x burn speed on DVD+/-R. No matter what burning software I use the highest I've gotten is 8x, even with 16x discs and the software set to 16x. I can't figure out what the bottleneck is, since my hard drive and the SATA interface can easily handle 16x.

Any ideas?

DVD+R 22X
DVD+RW 8X
DVD-R 22X
DVD-RW 6X
CD-R 48X
CD-RW 32X
DVD+R DL 12X
DVD-R DL 12X
DVD-RAM 12X
Are you using RW discs?

Nope, -R and +R

I'm guessing it is because of the DVDs. If you tried a different brand it might burn faster.

or firmware version, might be a known issue.

theres a firmware and extra software on asus's site if you go to the support/downloads then look up your dvd-rw drive..
