My potential DVD writer/player is the Lite-On Dual 8x8 SOHW-812S. If this is coupled with the ATI Radeon 9800 AIW Pro, can it produce the same level of quality as a traditional Sony or Pioneer DVD player? (Also, is 12x DVD-playback enough?)

DVD movies play at an effective 1x, although the disc may spin faster than that for ECC tasks and caching. For straight DVD playback, you will have no problems whatsoever.

Since straight DVD-to-DVD copying isn't ready yet, you will be ripping the DVD to hard drive first, then burning the image on the hard drive to DVD in a separate process. Your DVD read speed won't interfere with this, although the ripping speed is often correlated with the read speed. A 12x DVD-ROM drive will rip pretty fast, depending on the condition of the source disc.

Also, you might want to wait a month or so on the purchase. The Lite-On 832s will be out pretty soon, and that one will have dual-layer burning (twice the capacity on a disc).
