10Gbe fibre @ ~1Km/3,000ft - how would you do it?

Hey [H],

I'm a laser guy but don't often work with fibre, curious as to how you would go about sending data 1-2km even up to 5-10km if it's possible with similar gear as 1-2km, without wireless, as that seems to be still quite expensive and uses licensed frequencies subject to weather impingement and range limitations.

I assume the little fibre plug in modules for switches e.g SFP-10G would not have the range? What does?
I'm looking for a cost effective way to do this, only need a single fibre connection it seems like fibre and 10gbe stuff has become much more accessible than it used to be these days.

Also any minimum requirements for 10Gbe fibre cables (e.g. like cat5e/cat6 etc for Gbe) or are they all similar?

Cisco SFP-10G-LR-X module supports distance up to 10 Kilometers
 
To go that distance you will be running “Single Mode OS2” fiber. At that distance it will benefit you to run raw (unterminated) 12 or 24 strand ribbon fiber and pay to have it terminated.

It is unlikely that the entire length will actually be a single pull through conduit and/or aerial sections. Running ribbon fiber will make the splicing “in the field” faster because the tech can use a mass-fusion splice instead of individual splices.

Both ends of the fiber will need to be terminated in a demarcation point. I usually do an in-rack or wall mount 12 port LC/UPC duplex (the type of connectors) demarcation point. This gives the customer some flexibility on the way they connect to the fiber and some physical security to the ribbon fiber.

As far as SFP modules go you will likely end up with a “20Km SFP+ 1310nm DOM”. To connect from the demarcation point to the SFP+ module you’ll need a regular singlemode LC/UPC Duplex jumper.

Beautiful post, thank you very much, it's crop land so should be nice and open if timed right.
Can budget for a fusion splicer and lots of practice too, have time to do it one by one. 1310nm is a nice change from usual visible and near iR stuff, luckily had to run cables for nearly a decade now so it will be a nice challenge to try fibre.

i dunno that i'd buy a fusion splicer just for one job... but if you're looking to get into the biz, the prices on them have fallen considerably....

I usually use all-dielectric cable that isn’t gel filled so I can run it all the way to the demarcation point. If that isn’t an option I use an outdoor termination/splice box and run all-dielectric inside.

FS.com optics are pretty good too.
