1080p not wise for gaming just yet?

If it's true that most console games aren't available in native 1080p, wouldn't the graphics look better on a 720p (1680x1050) LCD? Even if the screen offers 1:1, it would look bad because of all the black space? And if it doesn't offer 1:1, it's going to be stretched but the textures won't be optimized for the higher resolution, right?

I understand that this isn't as much of an issue for PC's as you just need a better GPU, but that's not an option for consoles (which is what I'm asking about).

Even though no consoles are currently 1080p native, both Xbox 360 and PS3 upscale to 1080p and output 1080p (X360 via VGA, PS3 through HDMI). That said, it's true that the difference between native 720p and upscaled 1080p is almost nil, especially if you're not sitting two feet from the screen... but I'd still recommend getting 1080p displays. They're much more future-proof (not to mention that you can watch HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays).

the ps3 has right now only 1 game in real 1080p, and it's NBA (something), but it's normal, the console is new and they pushed new games out soon for it... but later games will be 1080p for sure!

Thanks for your input. Are you aware of any sites/links that show the quality between 720p and upscale 1080p?

My main concern is quality of image. I don't want huge black bars and I don't want a blurrier looking image because of upscaling. Can anyone else confirm if the difference between native 720p and upscale 1080p is negligible? Surely it has to be quite noticeable given the fact that there are considerably more pixels?
