I once bought four toolless 2.5" USB drive cases from this vendor whose name starts with "O." If I could, I would rate them -1 star

Just the other day, I thought that three external hard drives failed. It turns out that the drive cases all failed. When I put the raw drives into a "drive dock," and tested for bad sectors with Windows chkdsk, they were all 100% error-free. All these cases were made by "O." The fourth case failed a few months ago.

Previously I had a drive bay card reader by this same vendor fail. Sure they are low-cost. But it's just not worth the hassle, and then you have to spend more money to buy a quality product.

Unfortunately, we are on a race to the bottom on inexpensive electronics. If this is an inexpensive $9-$19 Amazon/eBay/Alibaba special (O r i c o I am guessing) I am in no way surprised. These devices are build to be the absolute cheapest they can be and quality control is for naught, and a whole batch failing isn't unheard of. Even with some of the more expensive models, from Vantec for example have been hit or miss. I have had relative success with the Ineo enclosures, so you might try one of them.

The mystery is what makes threads like these valuable to others....

You guessed right about vendor "O." I have had good luck (so far) with a Fideco drive doc, and a Startech 2.5" USB drive case. The Startech drive case is like 2X the cost of "O" but it's totally worth it if it works for the long term. Lucky I wasn't travelling because my new Lenovo T5650 laptop has only a 1 TB SSD and no space for a second internal drive (like my older Lenovo T-series units.)

Well, I learned some lessons here. Vendor "O" is on my s---list. I have had mixed success with vendor "V" whose name ends with "c."

Updating my original post. I just got a WD 4 TB Eaststore drive. It flatout was not recognized by Windows. That was with a cable that came with one of the O cases. I substituted for a different USB cable with the same funky device connector, and whaddya know, the WD is recognized right away. So add lousy USB cable quality to the list of sins by vendor O. So I just retrieved those three cases from the recycle bin and I'm going to retest them with this known good cable.

Sheesh. Vendor O and the word quality don't belong in the same sentence, or even the same paragraph.

Why the hell are you doing this "guess the vendor" thing? Just say what they are. Also you can curse here, no need for childish obfuscation.

Plot twist: User that starts with "x" and ends with "9" is a codebreaker IRL.

There are some brands that are filtered by the forum, even in PM. But there are ways around that for instances like this, as shown above.

I'll second the plea of 'please don't do this, just state who they are.'

So that vendor's full name is **********. (I can type out the name, but I'll be surprised if H allows this post.)

Update: OK, so I posted my reply, and you can see that H censored the name. Hey, I tried.

Charlie_D., I'm not trying to be a wiseass here. The rest of that vendor's name includes the letters R, I, C, and O. I hope that H doesn't block this with *******.

Is there a list of censored brands or vendors somewhere along with the reason they suck?

"O" I get, and they do suck.

But "V....c" only thing I can think that of matches that is Viewsonic. As far as I know, they're pretty decent.

That would most likely be because that company had come into our forums and made spam posts to promote it's products and we do very much frown on that.

it's like that old expression, "Old reactions ignore costly operations". Ok, maybe it's not totally like that expression.

Put a request in to the forum software vendor that mods can toggle the censorship off for a specific thread so you can slam a company. I got around it above by putting spaces between each of the letters, in post #2.

I am guessing Vantec. I have a couple of their USB enclosures.

You got it. Hit or miss. Some of the products were great. Others terrible. I had a Vantec drive bay card reader where the supplied USB cable did not work when you plugged it in to the USB port on the card reader face. finally support told me to trim back the rubber around the plug with a razor. Sheesh. Don't they test what they design? Guess not.

Updating my OP some more. All three of those cases do test good. But two of the three cables supplied with those cables tested bad. Cables!!!??!!! OK, so I have those cases back. But I wasted so much time that I'll never buy anything from O-R-I-C-O again.
