ok i have a buddy who just installed some memory in his apple laptop as the mem was bad, so after installing he turned it on and it asked him for a password, now the computer hasnt been working in 2 months so he cant remember the password is there a way he can retrieve it without rebooting osx

When exactly did it ask for the password? At the login screen? Open Firmware?

Installing memory really should have any effect on the OS, or what it does to start up... This seems a bit wierd to me... Mind verifing the type of computer he's got... I don't want to be a part of anything that's not exactly legal ;). Forgive me for being skeptical, but I've installed and upgraded *alot* or macs in the last 2 years (insurgence of Apple comps at my university campus) and I've never come across anything like this.

I'll second that; unless this an open firmware password, there is NO reason for a computer to just start asking for a password because it hasn't been turned on in a while. Please post more specifics.
