i keep seeing the 2.5" SSD go on sale, but how about 1.8"? i can't seems to find any, and time to upgrade my old Dell D430 w/ ZIF to uSATA adapter

If you have a machine which will ONLY fit a 1.8, you have to buy a 1.8 or find a way (ducttape and a longer cable ) to shoehorn a 2.5 in.

Your best chance is to get a micro-SATA to mSATA adapter (there exist only few models) and use an mSATA SSD (Crucial m4 256GB mSATA is not much more expensive than the normal version).
