Billions of increasingly smart and connected devices, data-rich personalized services, and cloud applications are bringing amazing experiences to our daily lives. This places unprecedented demands on today’s wireless networks and connected devices and makes faster, smarter, more efficient 5G wireless networks and technology critical. At Mobile World Congress 2016, Intel will announce new developments that will accelerate the road to 5G and help make amazing experiences of the future possible.

I'm not implying this is the case for 5G, but a lot of people may not realize that Intel makes a boatload of money from royalties of common protocols and standards as well as from ancillary devices such as network communications. It may not be obvious that their CPU's are just a part of what make them highest grossing semiconductor company on the planet for the last 20+ years (and by a good margin). This is why I don't see AMD ever being able to out R&D them. Intel would have to make another serious blunder (like Netburst) in order to be unseated.

The path to 5G in the US is one carrier decrees their connectivity is 5G and suddenly all the other carriers do too.
