This is the part where I fantasize about how much better the phone would run if it had a 1080p display instead.

This super spec'd version of Sammy's flagship phone is said to feature a 4K display, and a dual-lens camera module made by Sony. At the heart of this Galaxy S7 Premium Edition is a different version of the Exynos 8890 chipset.

Don't care

How about re-adding a removable battery, micro SD slot, and water-resistance?

Not really sure where this going. Adding all of this overhead and expense for a smartphone that's still just a smartphone just seems to be little more than a spec war. Don't think more and more specs are going to sell more and more smartphones anymore unless that smartphone is more like a PC that would attract buyers not all for the specs but flexibility.

4K? On a f***ing phone? Why the f*** do you need that? Why? So you can kill your battery in record time? Don't need it! 1080p is fine, hell 720p on a small device is good enough! We barely have the GPU power in mobile chips to push that many pixels.

They are going super high resolution so it works with the Samsung Gear VR. The current Galaxy phones have minor screen door effect.

Because 1440p on a tiny screen isn't enough!

1440 on phones does make things better. Things like serif font rendering are way better.

Why do you think Microsoft abandoned Times New Roman as the standard font on Office around 2007? Because serif fonts look like @$$ at 100DPI which is standard for desktop computer monitors. With 400DPI, serif fonts or detailed gothic fontsets look like they should-great.

4K, I'm a skeptic about however being much better over 1440.

Are we ever going to get a smartphone that runs actual Windows? What's the point of having a 1440p or 4K (or 1080p for that matter) screens, quad and octa-core processors, 2,3,4GB of RAM, etc if it's all so held back by such a limited operating system like Android?

What's the point of having a 4K screen if I can't even go to YouTube and view the full site where I can actually watch 4K video with Flash? What's the point of 3-4GB of RAM when I can BARELY do real-time multitasking (something that few Android phones support)?

It just all seems so silly. If the OS isn't going to expand and be a lot more functional then what's the point of ever increasing specs when even a phone like the Note 3 or 4 is still way more powerful enough for any app or game out today?

And yeah...I think 4K is ridiculous. I've never been one of those that thought 720p or 1080p was "enough". I do see a difference in 1440p...and that difference is pixel-less screens that truly don't need a higher resolution. Hell, my 28 inch 4K screen looks GORGEOUS even at roughly a foot away and it's only 157PPI, nearly pixel-less in it's own right (to the point that I don't even use AA in games anymore). So even at a 6 inch display a 1440p is nearly 500PPI! Come on now...

Only reason I see them using 4K in the S7 is if they plan on HEAVILY pushing GearVR or something...because a screen with that resolution I only see being really useful with VR due to the screen door effect. Which speaking of which can be greatly reduced as it is. Even on my Oculus DK2 (which uses the EXACT same screen as a Note 3...all the way down the bezels and having "Samsung" at the top) I just pull a matte screen protector on it and screen door was reduced like a good 50% or more. It's only noticeable now if you really focus on it. So at 1440p I see screen door completely going away with just a few modifications.

Alright I've gone on long enough. In the end, let's start putting real OS's on phones so that these specs are actually warranted and keep the resolutions where they already are unless you plan on giving us 6000mAh replaceable batteries or some other such nonsense!

I did find that odd the water-resistance went away with the removeable battery. You'd think no MicroSD+removeable-back would make it easier to make it water tight.

But again, nice specs, but why? It's a damn phone. Focus on battery draw, not excel spreadsheet power and DPI's for ants *knocks phone off counter Zoolander style*.

This is a special edition phone for a market obsessed with specs, why is anyone surprised?

60hz 4k porn is a thing of beauty.

I can't imagine a phone being able to handle the video requirements for it.
I'll believe it when I see it.

No, it's not. Not with these nasty bitches. I actually downloaded some 4K porn and had to turn it off...wayyyy too much detail for women that shouldn't have that much detail. There's a reason most of them have to wear so much makeup...and they don't even apply it to their razor burned bruised bodies.

Yeah...I'll stick to standard definition porn.

This +100

Also give it good battery life and a 1080p screen is all it needs. And stick with the standard Micro USB power connector so I don't have to carry around yet another charger/cable when I travel.

I would be willing to give up the Micro SD slot if they made 64GB flash standard and didn't charge an extra $100 for it.

4K is meant for VR, that's all this pixelrace is for, cuz for the relatively small VR market alone it would be prohibitively expensive to develop these things, while they can't do without them due to screendoor effect.

Basically, top tier smartphones are paying for the development of VR tech.

These specs scream battery drain. Unless this thing packs close to a 4000 mAh then I doubt you could go a full day of moderate use without charging.

And that's why G4 rules. Micro sd and remo battery, LG really should emphasise still having those two on their PR!

The poor can hook up their smart phone to a tv and it will become their pc?

Because Samsung Gear VR is absolutely amazing, with the only caveat IMO being that it needs a wider view angle and higher resolution.

If the S7 has a bit bigger screen, 4K resolution, and 14 core GPU to run games, it will be absolutely well game changing... literally changing the games that are possible. And before you say I'm a mobile game fanboi, check my post history I have traditionally HATED mobile gaming. But in VR its a whole other story.

Plus, 3D 360o VR porn dude... seriously. Going back to 2D porn after that is like going back to stealing mom's Victoria Secret catalog's before she gets the mail. So plebeian.

You're watching the wrong porn.

What are you crazy? That sounds like same futuristic Fallout 4 shit right there.
But they did that, and then the masses said "Ew, why is it only Apple seems to be able to make a sleek sexy looking phone"?

So first they put everything in the kitchen sink on the phone, but people bitched it didn't look and feel expensive enough.

So they made it rigid and all glass and metal surround very sexy even with curvy glass, and then people bitch it doesn't have a removable back lid so you can swap a battery and SD card and flappy cover over the charge port to make it waterproof and all that jazz.

They should focus on optimizing their shit first. It's sad when a phone with 8 cores still manages to stutter and lag. Seriously, how terrible are they at coding over at Samsung?

Sony already has a 4k phone coming out, but theirs has an sdcard slot, which is something the Samsung certainly won't. With Samsung you have "the cloud".

Fortunately, the most important markets such as China PRC is up in arms about that. They want'em MicroSDs, and together with the original core audience, there may yet be a chance to see some turnaround on Sammy's part.

If not, then we can all consider other phones. LG's V10 has Micro SD slot andf Android 6.0 finally would play nice with Micro SD at that.

These are completely different consumer bases but I suspect you knew that. I too am in the sd card "niche" as it is marketed now. But I don't believe I am the majority. The option to force upgrades with obsolescence is their objectivr. The masses have already voted for the short term gain, ooo shiny. The rest aren't buying this gen. Never underestimate the lowest common denominator. If you can sell 100 of a "bad" product and only "10" of a good one YEAR OVER YEAR then profit demands you make the disposable one.

After the past few threads where I felt like I was arguing against the majority. I'm so glad to see most people are starting to realize how incredibly stupid this pixel spec war is on phones. It's like they are just utterly against producing a really good phone with a reasonable screen resolution and incredible battery life. It just feels like Tim Taylor is in charge of all these companies as of late.

All the cpu in the world isn't going to make this shit faster with it taking forever to get phone up dates and shutting samsung over lays. My note 4 runs like shit with 5.0 on it. Maybe one day I'll get an update to 6.0 and maybe it will fix my shit or make it worse. Going iphone after this so I can maybe have a phone that just works and doesn't fucking g lag like crazy and gets updates when ever apple wants to send them out. Love to have a native unlocked android phone but I have verizon and have to have it for work so I'm fucked on that. Sorry for the rant.

If I were to believe rumors, I'd think the next iPhone would have a projected light keyboard and a roll-out screen. I'll believe this stuff when I see it.

Man, I hope this thing makes it to North America. I'm due for a new phone soon, and I'm specifically waiting on the S7. I want that 4K screen tho.. For GEAR VR.

The comments most of you guys are making regarding 4K on a smart phone being overkill is pretty short sighted. Mobile phone displays is what is driving the VR industry forward and making it possible. Companies like Samsung are investing in it HEAVILY. In fact, some industry experts are stating even 4k is not enough, they think it won't be good enough until we hit 8K.

Broadcasting live sports in VR is already in testing (NBA), and they are getting pretty smart about it. They only capture 180deg, and focus the highest resolution when you're most likely to be looking. In order to be able to stream all that data efficiently.

This tech is fucking amazing. I personally applaud Samsung and Sony for continuing to drive display tech forward to make all of this possible. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next 10 years is going to bring. Very exciting stuff!

Yay, 14 cores and 4k display! Now you can have a throttling stutter-fest in half the time, and with half the battery life!

My household has a Galaxy S3 and an S4. MicroSD and removeable batteries were the deciding factors. I thought the materials these phones are made from is fine. I only see the reviewers complaining about the "high-quality" feel of the materials, or lack thereof. How many people actually touch the OEM parts on their phones anyway? Most probably get a case and screen protection and never touch those parts again.

I had an iPhone 3GS before making the switch, and the larger screen and increased resolution were great. That was also the time when Samsung's whole ad campaign was about doing things ahead of Apple and being different. Hopefully, when it's time to upgrade, I hope I can find something with a microSD slot, but I'm pretty happy with my S4 at this time.

I have no interest in using my phone for VR. I use it for texting, phone calls, pictures, Google maps, and the occasional game/internet search.

I'm more concerned about long battery life, expandable storage, portability (size), a decent camera (as a backup to my real camera), durability, water resistance (just in case), and a standard micro USB connection so I don't have to carry even more cables when I travel.
Most newer phones fail on one of more of the above. Samsung was close with the S5, but they seem to have made a wrong turn with the latest models. Funny how they made the S6 more like the iPhone and the sales have been disappointing.

Actually Google maps experience is much better in VR with your phone for Street view option.
Every new disrupt in tech has resistance like that
