Microsoft Corp. on Monday opens the doors to its first flagship store in the heart of Manhattan at Fifth Ave. and 53rd St. — the cross streets of a vibrant and historic local community and internationally recognized shopping destination. In the making for more than six years, the five-floor, 22,369 square-foot store features an assortment of best-in-class products and in-store services familiar at the company’s more than 110 retail locations, while offering new interactive experiences to allow customers to get hands-on with products in an immersive way.

"hands-on with products in an immersive way"

The Buzz-Word is strong with this one.

So like, this could go one of two ways.

1. Microsoft is so totally out of touch with reality that they wanna open a physical store of all the dumb fail-cakes things to do in the world. No one buys stuff in person anymore and if they do they're probably like some kinda near-fossilized person who also clings to that whole light swords and force movie thing.

2. Microsoft is still doing the Steve B. thing of trying to be like Apple and will have a Genius Bar and other Apple-like junk which is semi-brilliant because their current line of tablets and laptop appeal to people who don't like Apple products, but badly wanna show off their computer stuff in a way that many stereotypical Apple people already do. They could sell folio cases that leave the lighted Microsoft logo exposed so that when you're using your tablet, everyone will know you have one with the latest telemetry collection OS installed.

In Miami we have both a Microsoft and Apple store in the same mall. From what I have seen the Apple store is usually twice as packed but most of the customers are gathered around the tech support area. At the MS store everyone is playing on the Xbox or checking out tablets.

Same in San Diego

I like the MS store, its an excellent place to get physical Xbox games, they tend to offer 10$ off or 25$ gift cards on pre-orders, as well as seemingly never selling out of collector/limited editions. A lot better experience than BestBuy/Gamestop/Walmart/etc
