Oh, that's just lovely. Robots evolve faster when you kill them? It would have been nice of someone told us this sooner!

Computer scientists have discovered that robots evolve faster and more efficiently after a mass extinction. The team at the University of Texas, Austin used a simulated mass extinction modeled on real-life disasters, and found that it hastens evolution in artificial intelligence.
 
This actually shouldn't be all that surprising though its also not something people immediately think about so I can see how it's flown under the radar. Humans do the same thing....a natural disaster is analyzed and structures are rebuilt/reinforced to withstand another disaster, mechanical designs are optimized to improve performance (safety, operational, comfort, etc...), and even businesses analyze themselves to find the inefficiencies, especially when they've gone through a failure.

AI would have the distinct advantage over (current) humans in being able to essentially rewrite their 'DNA' (physical connections, software coding, etc...). An argument can be made that AI would only suffer a single mass extinction event. After the first event, the AI would create a system whose sole purpose is to calculate all the potential scenarios that would bring about another mass extinction and then find a counter to it. An argument could also be made that they'd never suffer one as its something that's already been 'thought' of and this anti-extinction entity would already exist.
 
Haven't we always known this about evolution? If the organism has the desirable traits to get an advantage, its offspring live longer and reproduce more.
 
Doesn't life evolve faster after mass extinctions? Assuming it was a calamity that could be avoided (i.e. not an asteroid impact). First ice age... animals that could not handle fluctuations in temperature died, all those that could survived, and their genes went on... hence they got better.
