Mojang has just announced Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. The game will be free for those of you that already own the PC version, everyone will have to pay to play.

We have exciting news to share! A whole new version of Minecraft is on its way. This time, it’s for Windows 10 – Microsoft’s new swanky operating system that’s due for release on July 29th. We’re calling it Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. If you’re one of the 20 million(!) players who have the PC edition of Minecraft (referred to by techy people as the Java version) you’ll be able to download Windows 10 Edition Beta from the Windows 10 store for free. Other players can get it for the paltry price of $10 during the beta period (the length of which is still being decided).

Does pocket edition support mouse and xbox controllers?

Let's try this again.

Tommaso Checchi works on the Pocket Edition at Mojang:

"I'm going to say this because the drama is already too much: Windows 10 Edition is MCPE, and will always be updated together with it!"

So, slopping the phone edition into the Windows Metro App store or whatever its called this week and giving it a few updates that the phone edition will also receive .. is still just the phone edition.

And that's kind of the point. The desktop version of Minecraft isn't touch optimized and doesn't run particularly well on lower end hardware. This takes nothing away from the full desktop version and is being offered for free to existing desktop owners of the game and will only be $10 initially to new users. This is just another client for this very popular game.

That press release was painful to read. They've gone all microsofty.

It likely won’t have feature parity with Minecraft proper out the gate

Out of the gate? More like never. Why would they allow free mods when they want to sell DLC's and skins.
