Streaming Video Is More Than Half Of All Prime-Time Internet Traffic

The fact that Netflix and YouTube are responsible for more than half of all prime-time internet traffic isn't really surprising. Finding out that Amazon Video and Hulu are both below the 2% mark is a bit of a shock though.

That’s in the latest report (PDF) from internet analytics company Sandvine, which has been tracking trends in national and international data use for several years. Netflix by itself, the research finds, accounts for about 36.5% of all downstream internet traffic at that time of day. YouTube comes in second place, at about 15.5% of downstream prime-time traffic. That means, between those two services alone, streaming video accounts for over half of all prime-time internet traffic.

I wonder if Prime will ever catch up some? I know a few people with Prime and they don't use it for anything other than shipping (I sure do though - I use that more than "free" Hulu - and slowly using the prime music streaming service more as well).

I have prime, and while their instant video catalog isn't terrible (in fact there a few things there that netflix doens't have that I would like to watch), the simple fact is:

Terrible. Awful. Non-Intuitive.

Just the worst interface ever. Why does your catalog display each season of a tv show individually? Why doesn't the next episode start playing automatically? Why when the next episode doesn't start to play automatically does it kick me out to the episode where I started watching?

I hate the interface. A lot.

I agree the interface needs a lot of work. Its hard to do a search when the same show pops up 8 times because there are 8 seasons of it.

some things run Prime better for sure - PS3? automatically plays next episode. Sony BR player? nope :p it is certainly irritating that the interface isn't the same (and as usable) across devices :p

Search can be much better as well - found that sometimes searching would only bring up one version of a movie when there were two available (one in HD and one not?! and the HD version was Prime and the SD wasn't... but when you did a normal search the SD version is the only one that came up... but you could find the HD version with some work :p).

What about porn? Or do most people do that late at night such that its not considered "prime-time?"

Hulu: How would you like our Plus subscription service... after which we'll still give you ads, only not quite as many?

Me: Go DIAF.

Yesterday I got a Creeper snail mail letter from Amazon starting with "I noticed you haven't used your Prime Video features...."

My first reaction was, "WTF Amazon....not only are you of course spying usage data but then you have the nerve to tell me about it and make it sound like a good thing?" And funnily enough, I still have zero desire to use Prime Video.

EVERYTHING under Amazons control has a shit interface. It's almost like they TRY to make the worse interface possible.

amazon's selection is lacking but i already pay for prime so why not have it free is nice.
hulu we used to love when it first came out, it has gone down hill. i like their ads when its 1 every so often but the same add 40 times over 2 hours is mind numbing.

for the price hulu isnt worth it full time.

crunchyroll and dramafever also viki are huge in the asian communities and you get alot of bang for your buck including new shows each week.

i'd be interested in compression as well, maybe 2% is better due to better compression than netflix but I am doubtful.

Yeah, I absoltely hate their interface, to the point that we actually have Netflix as well and only use Prime Video for a rare rental and the occasional movie/show which isn't on Netflix.

I agree completely, I would subscribe to remove the ads but I'm not going to just to reduce them and instead I simply don't use Hulu at all anymore.

+1

Which is sad because video is probably their best way "in" to the home. Just found out Prime also comes with free cloud storage... If video was better I probably would poke around more of their services... which is exactly what happened when I started to use gmail...
