A major Hollywood studio abusing the system? I find that hard to believe. Besides, they said they didn't do it. ;)

Sending $20 piracy fines to alleged copyright infringers has landed Warner Bros. in federal court. The Hollywood studio is accused of harassment and abuse of legal process, but denies any wrongdoing.

Hmm.

Interested in this article, but apparently torrent freak is blocked at work :(

Warner Bros is asking for a dismissal. Early next month is when they meet to decide.

From what I understand... Basically, they claim they way they were doing things was protected under free speech and petitioning right. I might be reading that wrong though.
According to Warner Bros and Rightscorp the settlement demand letters are protected under California’s anti-SLAPP statute. As a result, the claimed abuse would violate the company’s free speech and petitioning rights.

So $20 fine is illegal but $1000s of fines upon $1000s until single moms owe $250k in fines is ok for sharing one mp3 or movie... for no profit? hmm.

So much for transparency.

What does this have to do with our current topic?

We aren't talking about Warner Brothers boosting their google ratings, we are talking about them - through Righscorp - abusing the subpoena process to mass get users identities and sen them $20 "fines" not sanctioned by any court.
