Microsoft announced the end of the line for the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, ceasing production as of Thursday. Microsoft will be consolidating its efforts on its Kinect SDK 2.0 and the Kinect Adapter for Windows.

Microsoft says it is “making an effort to simplify and create consistency for developers.” Yet in a previous announcement, Microsoft said that with the adapter, “all Kinect v2 sensors—Kinect for Windows v2 and Kinect for Xbox One — perform identically.” So why is Microsoft phasing out Kinect for Windows v2?

GEE WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT CHARGING $200 FOR A SENSOR THAT COSTS $20 TO ADD ON TO THE XBONE WOULD BE A BAD IDEA?!

It's like a magic trick! Two products/combos that cost the same amount and do essentially the same thing!

The adapter lets you use the Kinect for Xbox One with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 computers and tablets via a USB 3.0 port. If you purchase that sensor along with the adapter, the final price ($50 + $150) is the same as if you bought the $200 Kinect for Windows v2 sensor.

Can't say I blame them, they likely still have close to a million Xbox Ones with kinect in warehouses that they can't sell. Better to repackage the consoles and kinects for their respective audiences as oppose to making even more kinects no one is really interested in.

It's not really discontinued, they just stuck it in two different boxes. Connect for Windows was just the Windows adapter for Kinect + a Kinect 2. You can buy those separately now, for the same $200. Microsoft is just getting rid of the combined (and hard to move) SKU.

Pretty sure every Kinect SKU is "hard to move" at this point

Basically, they are no longer going to produce a separate product. Instead, they are going to continue producing the Kinect 2 adapter for Windows so you can use a Xbox one Kinect 2 on Windows. Make sense, why produce 3 separate products when 2 will do the job nicely.

If you're doing computer vision and autonomous systems it's a pretty good deal for a robust sensor. And that's about who it's aimed at. It's an R&D stack.
