Intel’s new RealSense technology is now available as an optional extra in the new ROG G771JM and ASUS N551JQ. RealSense integrates a set of three specialist cameras to provide depth (3D) sensing, enabling things like gesture control of apps and games, taking pictures and scanning objects in 3D and also readjusting the focus of photos after you’ve taken the picture. There’s even an SDK out now so developers will be creating or integrating new ways to use the technology into apps and games.

Can you imagine if someone "re-mastered" the old Commodore 64 game Stroker, with this new technology?

Oh the posibilites! :D

How do these new "RealSense" cameras stackup to say, the XboxOne Kinect's features/specs? They seem to have some similar elements, such as multiple lenses/cameras, IR, Laser etc. I see that Intel has been providing a SDK for RealSense which I am pleased to see, but I wonder how much of the specification is open source and released under a free software license - for what its worth, Intel is better than many when it comes to this (ie Intel WiFi/bluetooth cards are fully open source etc and I think many of their GPU drivers are as well. Not sure if that extends all the way to say, Iris Pro etc.). If this is truly an open standard, then hopefully it will proliferate considerably. I'm waiting for stand-alone and upgradable cameras to integrate this tech and these sorts of features, that you don't have to be stuck to a particular device. This seems to have the potential to integrate functionality only found with additional peripherals in the past - for instance, for the flight sim fans amongst us, TrackIR has long been an additional piece of kit to provide head tracking which needs its own (proprietary, windows only if I recall) drivers etc. With RealSense it seems you could have the same experience with only your camera! Furthermore, this seems like the perfect technology for mapping real-world facial expressions onto virtual avatars in real time (a la EverQuest Next and other MMOs to come).

Hopefully Intel will do the smart thing and make it easy to build RealSense compatible hardware and make any software/drivers open source released under a Free Software license, which can lead to wide adoption. I really hope it won't be another proprietary whizbang feature that is limited to a relative few Intel powered laptops/tablets/phones. Oh, but kudos to them for partnering with Asus for launching this tech. Asus (and as far as I know, some of MSI's offerings) are finally getting onboard with providing really powerful, gaming-level discrete graphics laptops that also have "luxury" features/materials/build quality, instead of being ugly hunks of plastic.

Yay we will finally be able to get rid of the abomination known as 'touch screens'.

Matte screens and a gesture aware sensor will quickly kill touch off. Finally!
