If you don't have anything to hide, this is a totally reasonable request.

In a post-Snowden plea for a policy more permissive of spying, FBI Director James B. Comey raised the specters of child predators, violent criminals, and crafty terrorists to argue that companies should build surveillance capabilities into the design of their products and allow lawful interception of communications.

Welcome to guilty until proven innocent.

I pray daily for bankruptcy of our federal government. We've become the Fourth Reich.

I'm, sorry.. but from someone in the intelligence community. This is total BS. (meaning the quoted source here.)

We are talking about the same office that BANNED furbies because they had a recording function to be able to repeat back what you said in a cute furbie way. All be it randomly.

And they want consumer electronics to have an "easier to use" and "built in" surveylence package?

There is NO more sure fired way to drive people away from American made/designed electronics than this. I mean seriously.

I probably have a recording device in my pocket at all times, and I know google always knows where I am at any given time because I always have it with me. Not to mention my car has a built in GPS so I know I can always be tracked with that as well.

If the NSA wants to know how to tell where people are and what they are doing, just get with the hackers. Heck at this point they know every american's spending habits, what they buy, and what the shop for, both online and in retail settings. I mean... seriously. Rather than selling credit card data they could make FAR MORE money selling the spending patterns of every person that has ever shopped anywhere to marketing companies.

Just imagine. "Hi Bob, we noticed that 5 years ago you purchased a cheer leader costume at Target, and a 14 inch strap on at erotica4u.com. How about enjoying one of our openly trans gender vacation packages? We can have burly women bugger you every day for your real vacation satisfaction." Or whatever... lol

This government is $18 trillion in debt, pays itself with Monopoly money and has sold out our country to Communist China. At what point do we stop putting up with this BULLSHIT.

This is the mindset of people today. They cry when you make their jobs harder. It is the duty of every American citizen to make the jobs of their government as hard as possible.

It is par for the course for government to use fear mongering on its own people. Think about the children! Fucking hacks.

George Orwell had it right, he just missed the date by a few years!!!!!!

I would have major problems with that claim, if our federal government was operating under constitutional law. It is not, and has not since 2001.

When the government implodes like a neutron star.

That day is coming sooner rather than later.

Cheer up.

Hardly the case. The government hasn't been following the constitution since like the 1930s. Just with varying and increasing degrees of abuse.

I'm talking about wholesale collapse of our Fourth Amendment at our airports and borders, equally wholesale collapse of our privacy rights etc. I agree with your claim but it's gotten exponentially worse since 911.

The other difference is that, thanks to our currently almost entirely dysfunctional SCOTUS, our feds are now operating under a false set of assumptions about what is, in fact, constitutional. Anyone who can find the words "except for special circumstances" anywhere in our Bill of Rights, please point them out to us. One by one these rights are being negated by the Supremes by artificial insertion of these four magic words. It's precisely the same process that converted the Weimar Republic into Nazi Germany.

Monitoring the hundreds of millions to catch the tens of thousands.

Yeah, sounds like a good plan.

Look for this to be rapidly advanced with Net Neutrality. People are rabidly foaming at the mouth for Net Neutrality yet fail to even remotely realize it has nothing to do with fast lanes, slow lanes, broadband speeds, or anything like that really. It is all about regulation of speech on the internet.

I more like hundreds to thousands. Because they don't actually care about catching any actual criminals. But rather want to catch the "suspected terrorists" whom most of them are entrapped in FBI stings. Which happens to be illegal.

Didn't like the Germany before the Nazi one get depicted as evil too because of World War I? So like, it isn't as if the history written by the victorious sides would portray the current US as nice or good or even take into account how the people in it feel about it if it went away. Also, stop whining. People end up making states and governments for themselves whether they like it or not and they all end up making people both happy and unhappy. So like, in the end, changing things will just put you back into the same situation that you were in before things changed...except there'll be a big disruption and people won't be able to print on demand books as easily while there's a futile, pointless war being waged over differences in ideology.

You all voted this shit in.
This is what you wanted, this is what you got.

"Change you can count on."
Well, here's your change; but just ask yourself: was it for the better? Really?

Enjoy your Fascist Dictatorship with a false Democratic/Socialist-front.

On a personal note, I would love to see lcpiper defend this one.
Though, if he does defend it, or say we are all crazy, it will completely oust him as a true fascist at this point.

Has anyone calculated how many billions of hours of productivity have been lost in our country trying to prove ourselves innocent to our own government at our airports and borders? Guess how many cost-benefit ratio studies were done prior to implementation of the TSA.

It shouldn't have been called 1984, it should have been called 2014.
Though, I suppose being 30 years off wasn't too bad.

Who knew that dark dystopian fantasy would soon become reality.

I actually place the date at December 22, 1913.

It's fun to watch people's eyes glaze over when you start tracing progressivism and conservatism to the early 20th century. Doesn't matter how germane Wilson and Coolidge are, they'll wonder both what you're talking about and why.

Since I work across the street from the Hover building in DC all I have to say to the Director is go back outside and pound some sand.. Go after the people you really should be looking into and that's the corrupt politicians.

First of all, this is kinda crafty and bullshit all rolled into one. The police will still have access to phone records and geographic data if not the data on the phone all along. I for one don't believe him or powers that be. I think by him making these pleas he is just playing everyone to feel a kind of warmth, a kind of trust in this new encryption so that people save more personal info on all these devices. Only to say, "got you bitch" in the end

That's ok.
If anything like this is implemented, it'll surely become a legislated requirement for all electronic services/devices sold in the US (even if it's made in China. In which case, you'll have two government spying on you for the price of one). It won't make Americans any more likely to choose a foreign alternative than before.

Exactly. This is 10000000% Obama's fault. Not an ounce of blame can be put anywhere else but on him... We had complete privacy before he came in office, now thanks to Obama, the government is going to start monitoring everything we do or say or even THINK!! That's right, our fascist dictator got the FBI to development technology to read your minds... Thanks Obama!

I seriously hope you don't believe the BS in your post... The president is just a puppet, regardless of their political party. Neither party gives a shit about the people. So if you somehow think once a republican gets in office this will all be fixed, then you're [insert personal attack against intelligence here]

There are no winners in politics, you vote the best choice at the time and understand that in the end it doesn't matter because absolute power corrupts absolutely. You think if the election went the other way things would be different? If you do you are deluding yourself. Understand that this "Fascist Dictatorship" was made by George W. and his cohort Dick. Checks and balances were thrown out on 9/11. You allowed them to have that power and now that power will NEVER be revoked. Whoever you vote for next no matter what they say to win or what party they belong, they will not relinquish any power that has already been granted, and will be more than happy to use it. Just think Patriot Act, people accepted it because it expires every few years, but what good is an expiration when it will just be rubber stamped to renew or anyone against it is branded "soft on terror".

We the people have already granted the FBI the right to track us. You did it every time you agreed to the EULA or ToS when you bought your cell phone or signed up for internet service. They all say they anonymize the data but you know that data is sold to others and I am sure the biggest customer is the FBI/NSA either directly or indirectly. No matter how anonymized that data is given enough data you can figure out who it is. Encryption is our last stand in terms of privacy, if it be comes mandatory to have back doors for spying, only the criminals will have any possibility of privacy.

Umm..

Obama certainly shares in the blame, but only in as much as he has failed to reverse the 2001 Patriot Act and related legislation resulting from the Bush administration and a conservative congress that brought us to where we are today.

Pointing the finger squarely at Obama is just blatant intellectual dishonesty.

Seeing that he is saddled with an obstructionist congress that can't get anything done, I am not going to be THAT harsh on him in this regard.

Don't get me wrong, I think he has been a bit of a disappointment, but the crazy right wing contingent out there seems to want to blame EVERYTHING on him, whether supported by fact or not...

It's kind of depressing.

I think our legal system already practices guilty until proven innocent by throwing you in jail, making you pay bail to get out, if not you have to wait in jail for your court date. Oh, and while you're in court guess what, you stay in jail. Fucking ridiculous.
