Hang on, if they start testing on artificial humans what will PETA have left to bitch about? :D

Smartphone-sized microchips replicating human lungs, livers and other organs are being used to test the body's reaction to new drugs. They are branded as 'human on a chip' and developers hope to create 'human farms' to replace the controversial technique of live animal testing.

I pictured something way more gruesome when I read the headline.

I'm disappointed by the article and let down by the whole concept.

I wonder if our brainless clones would grow like pumpkins, or on trees...

Wouldn't it be better if we test it on death row inmates and rapist?
We could even expand it to the general prison population to reduce their sentence.
No, seriously.

That would classify as cruel and unusual punishment and in certain circumstances could be a war crime/crime against humanity. Are you seriously advocating that?

At some point, an extremist group will pop up for these organs. So PETA will simply be replaced.

Make it optional then. Suppose the drug did work - guy gets 20 years off his sentence and is cancer free. I know people that would go for experimental drugs if there was even a slight chance of a cure... They are going to die anyway, so it either kills them faster (saving them the pain) or it cures them. Sad way to live....

Of course some people would advocate human trials on the bad guys. Worked for the Nazi's, right?

And as much as no one likes to broach the subject, we learned a shit ton from the Nazi's inhumane experiments.

I was really expecting something about clones. The ethics of that would be rather sketchy. This, I actually can't even see working, at least not as a complete replacement for animal testing. Maybe as a supplement to reduce it.

This thing can't come soon enough. I am all for replacing animals with politicians, though. We're a terrible species.

Yes. That's actually one of those things that if you drop your moral compass and do human experiments, you would gain a lot of knowledge and would do a lot for humanity. But, who know's if it'd be worth it...

Apparently no one has seen The Island.
Because that worked out great! :D

I think we should supply study materials so the animals are better prepared for the testing...:D

Yep. You first think, "If I experimented on one human, I could save the lives of two." Next thing you know you've got farms of humans in test tubes all for the betterment of mankind

They say that American conservatism isn't storming down the path to glorious, full on fascism.

The'll be replaced by PETAH: People for the Ethical Treatment of Artifical Humans. I actually agree with their sentiment on animal testing (especially for frivolous things like cosmetics, but for now if you want to test new drugs, it requires animals. I'll be glad when we no longer have to do that.

Biochip tech has a lot of promise. It can be made to run a lot of test in parallel and it is also far easier to watch the testing process while it is happening. Parameters can be tweaked on the fly and obviously whole process can be automatized. It also greatly reduces the everpresent human error factor and makes comparative testing easier.

Wow what an excellent use for such wasted potential!

Now if we can only gather all the lawyers and put them at the very bottom of the sea I think we'll have some REAL hope to look forward too :D

Hey, everyone knows you're suppose to let them back into society as reformed men. Then of course they go right back and do the crime again.

PETA will easily transitions by adding an extra "P" to the end of their names and become People for the Ethical Treatment of Artificial People.
PETAP.

Done and done.

Oops, that's what I get for not checking the second page of comments before adding my own.

Perhaps PETA will splinter and your PETAH and my PETAP will start a long, bloody war over which one cares about artificial beings more. That'd be fun.

"Free the Gangers! Free the Flesh!" :p

Or maybe after being here 13+ years, you would figure out how to increase the posts per page....then everything would all be on one page! ;) :D

Depends on the type of tests makeup allergy tests would not be so bad wear this for 8 hours and tell us if any thing feels off. They could have a doctor able to treat allergic reactions and it could be the jobs they have.

Yes things like Let us cut off your arm to find the best way of reattaching it is cruel but so is some of the things they did to get in to jail

Just get a couple ISIS members from Syria/Iraq and test on them instead of animals.

Fascists and Nazis were both left wing. I know you're just trying to be cute, but the opposite of what you're trying to say is actually true.

No they weren't. Jesus go to political compass. Noam Chomsky is a socialist and he's more of a libertarian than most people in the U.S. Obama economic policy is closer to Rand Paul's than he is to Chomsky, while Paul and Chomsky are closer on the Fascist/Libertarian scale. There's a reason why Paul and Bernie Sanders (a socialist) can co-author legislation.
