In the war on drugs, nationally and internationally, governments are fighting a losing battle. The harder enforcement agencies try, the faster the illegal sources step up their illegal activities. BBC News found that within the last year since the FBI closed down the ‘Silk Road’, illegal drug traffic has more than doubled on the ‘Dark Net’.

In October 2013, there were 18,174 drugs listings across four main markets, according to the internet safety organization Digital Citizens Alliance, based in the US. A recent trawl of the dark net by BBC News revealed there were now 43,175 listings across 23 markets.

Well let's see...

They shut down silkroad, and proceeded to let the existence of it get advertised on every website around the globe repeatedly. So now millions more people have become aware of it.

Having shut down silkroad, now everyone who wanted to get in on it sees the chance to do so as there is a void in the market.

So yeah, of course it's going to go up.

Ordering drugs online is like ordering groceries online, why would I got though the hassle of waiting for delivery when I can just walk down the street and pick it up in person?

Unless it's significantly cheaper or something, because it's certainly not any safer.

Higher quality, because you're buying directly from the supplier.

Not sure what neighborhood you live in, but not everyone can just walk down the street and pick up on person when the nearest town if 20 miles away. Also like ordering on Amazon the selection is probably far wider than what any local dealer stocks in person.

Until you become a danger to other people, or until you injure yourself and expect the medical system to save you (at taxpayer expense), or until you become a net drain on society.

Safer is in the eyes of the buyer.

It would appear to me, for the more hardcore drugs, that are found in sketchy parts of town and the drugs are often of dubious quality, an eBay-style feedback system for vendors is a boon.

Further on the topic of safety, a percentage of drug users cannot travel far, or their transportation is of dubious quality which would lead to profiling by the police.

As an addendum, for example, high quality cannabis extracts and edibles are readily available in two American states, however, my understanding is those items are hard to come by in rural America.

agreed on all points

It seems like "number of listings" is a poor metric to measure actual drug traffic with, although I can see how it might be the only real statistic available to them.

I would guess it is more likely that most of those new listings are a massive honeypot effort on the part of the alphabet agencies, and the rest are likely to be regular ol' run of the mill scams.

I can do that with cheap booze from Walmart... what exactly is your point?

If that's your stance, you should be in favour of legalization and taxation of drugs, so the druggies can pay for their hospitalization if that needs arise with the taxes they paid by buying it. :D

Depending on the drug in fact I am. Meth, pcp, heroine, etc should never be legalized.

But if they aren't, people just keep getting jailed for it on your hard earned tax money. It doesn't stop consumption, and since it's not taxed no money is coming for treatment either, so it's just a complete waste of money, as prohibition of any substance always was.

Exactly. Legalize and tax it. Mandate the tax money be used for rehab, etc.

Currently people obtain drugs illegally (face it - if people want drugs they WILL find a way to get them), we have all of the crime/violence associated with the illegal drug trade, and then tax payers picking up the tab to send someone doing drugs to prison.

Instead we could legalize them putting black market dealers out of business so no more 'turf wars'. The people wouldn't be breaking the law in doing drugs, so less tax payer money going to pay for someone in prison. Plus the tax money generated from sales would pay for the treatment programs, meaning for the average person treatment programs would be tax neutral (not raise or lower your taxes), yet the programs would be funded.... by the very people that need help.

This is how many European countries do it, and they have less addiction, lower prison populations, and lower drug related crime per capita than we do. It's time for the US to start being smart regarding our drug policies.

I'm sure they don't have privatized prisons over there though. Putting people in jail is big business here in America. Treatment doesn't earn companies tons of money, having repeat offenders does. As long as privately owned prisons exist, with the millions of dollars they spend lobbying each year, nothing will change.

You can get much better quality and at a much better price. A friend of mine showed me SilkRoad on TOR before it was shut down and you could buy an ounce of high-quality kush for less than half what it sells for locally on the street where I live.

Better criminalize Alcohol, nicotine and all prescription drugs as well then. How many billions of dollars and lost lives has been lost to just Alcohol and Nicotine? Might as well go for Caffeine, MSG and sugar as well. to many fat asses out there.

Legalize or at least de-criminalize it all.

And your body. Freedom is freedom to choose even if it kills us..
Especially if it kills us.
Our life (and death) is the only thing that is only ours from the beginning to the end, and nobody has any right to tell us what to do with it.

So true, a little socialism in the US wouldn't be a bad thing at all when it comes to law enforcement and medicine. We've allowed mega corporations to take complete control of this country and it's only getting worse as the years go by, obviously the madness isn't going to stop anytime soon.

Despite the billions spent on the war on drugs, the DEA only stops 1% of the drugs entering this country.

And we'll never see a cure for cancer because big Pharm and medical makes more money treating it than curing it.
