Set off an explosion of new internet names? Really? Not an avalanche or something like that?

Starting next week, the Internet is going to look very different -- and ICANN Chief Executive Fadi Chehade is the one who'll get both the credit and the blame. Today, Net addresses end with 22 familiar terms -- .com, .net, and .edu -- called generic top-level domains (GTLDs). But starting Feb. 4, the first of hundreds of new GTLDs will begin arriving -- .ninja, .farm, .shoes, .photography, .bike, .pink, and even .wtf.

Great, now when I want to lock down a trademarked or about to be trademarked name, I have to buy 40 domains instead of 4 or 5........

DUMB idea, IMO.

Why would I ever want to use more then three characters for the TLDs? farm, shoes is cutting is close but photography... That's just stupid. Maybe photo, nah that's still too long

That was exactly my thoughts. Then it hit me, that's the point, it's a huge money grab.:mad:

If you actually own the trademark then ICANN will lock un-used domains.

So if I owned the trademark to "IOPS" and I only want iops.com, then ICANN will lock, iops.org, iops,co.uk, ect so they can't be used.

Whats with the china squigles! Now there will be japanese porn sites that I won't even be able to get to since I don't know how to type squiglyscratchsquigledothyphen on my keyboard.

Do you really need to though? Do you honestly envision your customers going to 'Trademark.wtf' such as 'Microsoft.wtf' and believing its MicroSoft's homepage? That a professional company owning their own trade mark would not also own the .com?

I can't envision a need to buy the .ninja or .wtf versions. If someone falls for a phising email titled 'Trademark.ninja or Trademark.feet It's honestly their own fault, isn't it?

They could have replaced ALL of these new TLDs with one:

.LAME

whats the point of top level domains? Why aren't just as customizable as domains? Like why can't I just do [first name].[last name] ?

Because .[last name] ends up being the TLD.

A TLD serves as a directory for SLD.

"Back in my day, we had to use straight IP addresses and view the www as text.."

I think it is quite humorous when people complain about change on the internet.

Same reason people can't just pick their exchange or area code. If anyone could willy nilly make TLDs no DNS server would know where to go and it'd be chaos.

You can pick any area code you want now. Call Verizon up. "I'm using this phone in Chicago." Bam. Chicago number.

Well so much for the times when if you didn't know a company's website you could just type in the company name +.com, or .net. Why does stuff always have to be taken to ridiculous extremes?

I'm not too familiar with DNS stuffs.
Can't the DNS server just do the same thing it does to domains?

I always though DNS servers just do a mapping like so:
bankofamerica.com -> [ip address]

so then I naturally just imagine the DNS server can do:
bankof.america -> [ip address]

but I'm sure there's something under the hood i probably don't understand.

I still want blow.me

or at the very least a .fart TLD if only for clownpenis.fart

Basically your pc asks your configured DNS servers what's the IP for google.com? DNS servers says idk, ask root server. Root server says idk but ask .com TLD DNS server. .com TLD server says idk but ask the authoritative server for google.com (ie ns.google.com). Google NS says u have that record, the IP is x.x.x.x.

Your ISP DNS servers just cache these IPs for faster lookups. They are called recursive severs.

Root servers only know where to look for the TLD servers. TLD servers know where each domain is and what name server hosts the records. Those servers then have the authoritative records on them (whether they are you registrars or your own)

I can imagine f.u, f.you, phuck.you, etc. being snapped up as well. :D

Also, who is going to grab john.doe and jane.doe? They'll go for a mint in the secondary market.
