The US District Court for the District of Columbia has ordered Homeland Security to disclose the details of protocol to shut down the nation’s cellular and wireless networks. The protocol is also referred to as Standard Operating Procedure 303, otherwise known as the Kill Switch.

This protocol is described in the court filing as an "emergency wireless protocol...codifying a shutdown and restoration process for use by commercial and private wireless networks during national crises."

Another reason why I love amateur radio. Perhaps they have kill switches in the newer stuff, but there's no kill switch on a vacuum tube transmitter.

Would it be for killing the ability for people to use voice or for keeping people from disseminating data?

Both. Prevent the spread of a mass pandemic like effect. They get to control how information gets disseminated among either isolated towns or even in large cities before the world does. Its just another form of the Government reaching way beyond what it should be allowed to.

The Boston bombers probably really pushed this along in Homeland security own opinion.

Control information and you control everything.
