Dear Google,

Please stay out of my mail box. Your meddling in my e-mail is making it harder for the NSA to scan the contents of my inbox. ;)

Signed, General Population.

Google's attorneys say their long-running practice of electronically scanning the contents of people's Gmail accounts to help sell ads is legal, and are asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to stop the practice. In court records filed in advance of a federal hearing scheduled for Thursday in San Jose, Google argues that "all users of email must necessarily expect that their emails will be subject to automated processing."

meh, i get a free email service that i enjoy, google can read my emails. my isp can already see all the gay midget thai yaoi porn i enjoy for 45 seconds four times a day.

I personally don't have a problem with Google scanning my email because all they want to do is show me adverts.

I do have a problem with the government scanning my email because they've created an absurd number of ridiculous laws. Most people break multiple laws every day, many of which would carry a massive fine and/or prison sentence. Fortunately the sheer number of ridiculous laws the government has created makes it impossible for them to enforce most of them. If the government gets to a point where it can monitor everything you say and do (it seems to be making good progress towards that) then it will be able to enforce more of its laws and then we'll all be in trouble.

So my general view is:
Google: wants to show you adverts = not a problem.
Government: wants to take away your freedom and liberty = big problem.

Google is pretty evil and someone needs to put a stop to this sort of thing. If it costs too much money to run their e-mail service without creepy invasive ads, that's too bad. They should have thought about that before they started depending on sifting through random messages as a way of making money for their awful, unethical business.

In as much as I don't like Google scanning my email (ok, maybe hate it), legally I think it is their right as long as they put it in their terms of service. I don't like it, but I'm not sure it is up to the government to tell them they cannot do it.

Google - it's in the terms of service. A free service. People should pay attention. Like google maps? Guess what... they track GPS info too. That goes for any of their services. Like your fancy android phone? They scan that too. Like your iPhone? Apple does it too. I don't mind because I agreed to it. Fill your servers with my pointless email and location info.

NSA - There were no terms of service that I agreed to.

If you don't want Google/Apple/MS/Facebook/etc... looking at your stuff stop giving it to them. Buy your own domain and host your own email.

Unfortunately there's not much we can do with the NSA problem.

I have no problem with Google doing that because they fully disclose what they do. After all, that is why I refuse to use my gmail address despite being forced into one when I bought this Android based phone. I logged into my gmail account for giggles and saw like 1000 pieces of unread garbage. Like the article says, the problem I have is when I am sending email to someone with a gmail account because I did not agree to their terms of service.

Just turn off web clips and Google will no longer scan your emails*
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&shva=1#settings/webclips

Want to stop Google recording your searches? Turn of Web History and delete you history:
https://history.google.com/history/

Don't want Google to track you Interests, Gender, Age, ect? Opt out of interest based ads:
https://www.google.com/settings/u/0...J8cnB9S7TOLFW5XCH2jI9pCDxjK4AqaQy5ei5mlbUB1Pw

*you will also need to opt out of interest based ads, see above.

Google lets you fully opt out of monitoring and tracking, they make money as very few users do opt out.

With Lavabit gone there isn't really any other easy to use options. None of the other providers can be trusted.

Security and Email are no longer to options that can co-exist.

REALLY?

Dont use it. Simple is it not?

I swear some of these people have a high horse that cant be found on this planet

Google does allow opt outs for the targeted ads and Google Now augmentation.

I think the thing people would miss the most if this lawsuit went through is spam detection. If Google can't read your mail how can they accurately filter out the garbage? If you need a reminder about how damn different things are without spam protection just take a quick peak at the spam folder in your gmail ;)

It's amazing how much "real time" the smart ads on Gmail are.
Wrote a "happy birthday" email to a family member. After sending that email, I immediately was greeted with an ad banner for a birthday cake.

Or maybe if you don't want a free email service, that is openly paid for by ads which are targeted via scans you could just not use gmail, or similar free email service and get a paid one instead that doesn't need to sell ads.

This is why I host my own email, and why I made sure the server is in Canada. Self signed cert encrypted connection to get to it from my house. The NSA would have to come to Canada if they really wanted to read my stuff. I suppose if they had reason to they would do it anyway, but at least I am not be part of the general surveillance data.

I don't see the problem with Google scanning email for better targeted ads. This is agreement you have with Google to get the 'free' service from them. They're not doing it behind your back. If you don't like this don't use Gmail. How is this so difficult to understand? Comparisons to NSA are stupid, you didn't make any agreement with the NSA to allow them to read your email.

It's almost impossible now to avoid Google's spying practices. Their search engine can be avoided but almost every website uses their advertising and/or analytics services. Also, if you're sending an email to a gmail account they'll read it and profile you (the sender) in one way or another and you're unable to avoid it. Google is everywhere now, and I agree with CreepyUncleGoogle their datamining and shady practices are polluting the internet and need to be stopped.

Yeah it's sad. they also seem to have access to credit card data such as transactions if the name you use is the same as your google account... even if you no longer use your google account they have ways to link stuff you do online to it, via IP.

I don't know how many times I've purchased something in a physical store, only to get home and see ads on the internet on the same subject of what I bought. I don't know if Google has agreements with the CC companies or what, but it's creepy the amount of info they truely do have access to whether or not you use their products.

You can block 3rd party cookies to help a bit, but that sometimes breaks other sites that are badly coded and depend on it to work.

Not only is there a billion ways to block analytics, but google even gives you a god damn extension to do it:
https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

And don't send emails to people who have gmail accounts? Not sure who is forcing you to do this.

Almost impossible?

I'm aware of the solutions but its an annoyance that shouldn't exist and 99% of the world is not computer savvy enough to implement them either.

And your solution to just not send emails to gmail accouns...gggreat solution you must be a whiz on the intertubez.

Are you also planning on blocking every website that needs Google's hosted javascript libraries just to function?

This company and their spying is simply unavoidable on the internet.

I have those libraries on my hard drive and when websites try to get them from Google servers they get re directed to my hard drive.

Makes loading them faster and more secure.

Wait is it nearly impossible or is it just an annoyance?

Google give you the option to opt out, the 99% who don't opt out is what allows us to have a nice service.

I would have no problem if Google, like they did at one time years ago, simply ran automated scanners on Gmail and picked out keywords to be matched to the single block of ads they showed from that particular email. Where I feel they cross the line however, is the continued monitoring and building of a persistent, pervasive, profile - a profile which is then used for all manners of privacy invasion, including 3rd party advertising. Google has increasingly over the past several years attempted to track and analyze more personally identifiable data of those that user their service for these commercial enterprises and have gone out of their way to try to defeat those that wish to remain anonymous or disconnected. See: Google+ real name only policy, combined with universal information sharing and identifiers between all Google accounts and products (ie YouTube, Chrome etc...)

I like some of the services Google offer (gmail), but I am appalled at their complete disregard of privacy, not to mention their willful collusion with both government (NSA) and corporate (health insurance companies! ) entities to monetize personal information without consideration for privacy beyond the thinnest veneer.

It's an annoyance to ATTEMPT blocking and avoiding all of Google and their services but it is basically an impossible task since they're everywhere. Almost every website links to them in one form or another: ads, analytics, custom search, embedded youtube videos, google+, javascript libraries, etc. etc.
