It looks like Hollywood now views piracy as a "proxy of consumer demand." What ever happened to the whole "piracy is not a victimless crime" stuff?

Major content companies are beginning to acknowledge that “pirates” aren’t necessarily all evil, but actually lead the way to future business models. Movie studio Warner Bros. is among those who are starting to interpret piracy as a marker signal. “We view piracy as a proxy of consumer demand,” Warner Bros. anti-piracy chief David Kaplan notes, adding that the company adjusts its legal offerings to better compete with piracy.

If this was true, you'd see warner bros making porn.

Lawsuit. I want back pay for all the consumer demand market research that I performed for the major content companies. :)

So is this why movies that get massively pirated pre-release and no-one sees them in a movie theater means the movie is wicked awesome and what people want?

Heh Kyle's photo is cut off a bit, theres even more to that pic that supports how absured it is to watch physical media.

Its great when I get stuff from netflix or Live! or iTunes, NO COMMERCIALS ZOMG.

I get this is a joke. But interestingly enough - no. Porn is not profitable since you can get good enough porn for free..and it gets boring in like 10 minutes. 5 Billion in revenue last year I believe. That's like as much as Activision Blizzard makes in one year. That's fairly pathetic when one video game company matches a whole industry.

Usually.
and it gets boring in like 10 minutes. .
Then you're not getting 'good' pron; the problem is, there's no real standard as to what's good in the x rated film industry, what is great to one person sucks (pun intended) to someone else. There is a difference between 'good enough' which you can get for free, and 'good'. I still have pron on VHS from the eighties which is excellent all the way through. It's not all crappy music, no plot, girls with overdone makeup and horribly fake body parts (there really ARE fake boobs that look and feel real, you just cant tell), and all grunts, groans, and squeals.

Narrator: You wouldn't steal a handbag. You wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't steal a baby. You wouldn't shoot a policeman. And then steal his helmet. You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the policeman's grieving widow. And then steal it again! Downloading films is stealing. If you do it, you will face the consequences.

Roy: Man, these anti-piracy ads are getting really mean.

This is why I stopped buying discs. BlueRay is the worst offender.

MakeMkv + 15 minutes = Movie in ready to play form without nonsense and with top notch quality picture and sound.

AnyDVD HD + 55 minutes = ISO in completely untouched form with all features intact , minus FBI warning crap and it takes less than 24 seconds to load into the movie playing.

There is no reason you can't still buy discs and its become absurdly lazy to do this process. I would rather own the movie I bought in physical form then trust my digital rights to it in the "cloud" from some site/service.

Either way Warner Bro's saying what they said is a complete reversal to what they said almost less than a year ago. About time that even the small , remote thought has entered their mind that the way to beat pirates to offer the same content without all the bullshit at a fair price in an easy obtain fashion. That's how piracy (as far as movies/tv are concerned) can be destroyed , create an option that doesn't require a first born and your soul to load up a movie.

Except I could just download the MKV in 20-30 minutes, and not have to deal with opening the stupid package/starting software to change formats etc. A 50Mb connection can download 3.7GB in 10 minutes, and we are starting to see speeds higher than that now.

So unless they are planning on a more expensive Netflix like service that includes the latest content, then they are just talking out their ass. With the internet how it is now, that is the only acceptable business model to move to, and would severely reduce pirating. I would much rather use a service like that than pirate (if I was a pirate).

But, but, but.. if they didn't have all the crap at the beginning of a disc I wouldn't have time to go take a dump and then get my snacks and drinks ready before the movie starts. :p

It is kinda nice to be able to finish dinner when you try to watch a movie.

This story made me laugh. They were the same ones going after pirates for years, and now they are saying they are helpful.

I do agree with the photo, and the last part of the photo was by the time it gets to the actual start of the movie, your Big Gulp has already gone flat!

I remember another story Steve posted a while back, where the story was about Game of Thrones being one of the most pirated shows, I can't remember if it was the first season of the show or the second, but it was one of the two, and I found it interesting because if I were a studio executive, and I was handed that data, one of the obvious questions that would just leap out at me would be,"How do I turn these non-paying customers into paying customers?"

Now, there'll probably be some jokes about the MPAA and suing them, but, if I wanted to tackle the problem more constructively, I would look at having an online offering, where you can buy episodes of the show directly off the HBO website.

I really think the answer to piracy is doing what they do with a lot of shows and offering to let you buy each episode for you to view at home. They do this already with a lot of shows on iTunes, Amazon, and a few other sites. That's the true answer to piracy, in my opinion.

Also if you produce higher quality shows, that doesn't hurt either.

And personally, I don't like all those mandatory previews, and FBI warning messages and whatnot, they do nothing to add to the viewer experience and only detract from it and hinder paying customers, just like DRM does for paying customers of computer games.

I just think they should do away with those entirely, they don't deter anybody, and all they do is encourage the very behavior they are trying to put a stop to. It's just counterproductive.

Funny but sad and true if you pirate your software you will have a better experience. Same goes with any software with all that drm they force down your throats. Get the pirated version and wow no drm anymore :) I own a few games that have no drm or copy protection that I paid money for and could of easily downloaded with torrent. For example I spent around 50.00 dollars for Oblivian and I remember that it sold well with no copy protection or drm. All I can say to developers if you make a good program that is hastle free and no drm I will pay for it. You put all you bs in there well I um... you get the idea.
