Using Facial Recognition To Find Face On Google Maps

I have reservations on this since Google is a known CIA front.

Google Earth & Maps are used by the US Military & other agencies. Why would it be a specific front for CIA?

You guys can joke, but before they started blurring out faces, one of the guys from another forum I'm on found himself on google street maps with a Thai hooker under each arm in Pattaya after he saw what he thought was a google maps van.

Chances are slim his wife would ever find out about that "business trip", but with google face recognition searches, you would basically have no expectation of "privacy of anonymity" anywhere in the world.

IMO that's pretty f'd up as you can be cyberstalked, and I don't even know how people that are relocated for witness protection programs.

And if its only the government that gets this power, I for one don't trust them not to abuse it. Regular Joe might be fine, but I can see them trying to screw over political opponents by saying "aha, see Republican Senator so so was over here on this date at this shady establishment, let me leak that to the press".

Yeah that's pretty f'd up. That guy should totally be free to cheat on his wife in a public place without her finding out. Damn you Google for eroding our personal freedoms! What is this 1984?![/sarcasm]

I'm wondering how many people are going to comment on this without watching the video or reading the article and just assume the [H] headline means they're looking for actual faces.

Pretty decent, but hasn't PARC been working on this for a dozen years already?

THE HUMANITY.

Pretty much, yeah, its not unreasonable to expect that a mega-corporation isn't going make your whereabouts and activities searchable at the click of a button. And yes, there is an expectation of anonymity even in public places.

Now, yes, if you want I could have made up a fake story about how a poor gay college student was outed by Google to his parents, but it doesn't take much of an imagination to figure out it would royally suck.

But yeah, even though this is just about wasting time and money finding "faces" in topology, IMO the real discussion of using such software to track people's license plates and faces and make them trackable is a real threat.

Good sweet christ the sky is falling today, batten down the hatches

LMFAO, I like your reply!

On serious note, Google agreed to hand over the email lists and warned it's users. I find that annoying and also find uncle sam annoying that he wants to know what my business is. My business is nothing interesting and in fact if anyone was watching me. A major snooze would occur on the intelligence gathering.

Facebook is also a CIA front, they admitted to it.

I guess I am old fashion, if I want to bump a cute escort...that is my business and hers. (speculation)

Well, we have to keep in mind that the images on Google Maps are not real time video feed, but just static pictures of that place in a particular time and that's all it will be over the next many years. We can't tell what happened at that particular place yesterday, right now or tomorrow. This is important because unlike Google Maps, millions of people around the world are taking pictures of places around them and sharing them on Facebook every single minute (and they do not blur out stranger's faces). There's a higher probability for your friend being seen on Facebook than on Google Maps. :p

At the end of the day, he was outside in a public area, with or without Google Maps, in today's trend of people constantly taking pictures everywhere they go and are always connected to the internet to share them, it's not practical to expect any privacy. Google Maps is certainly not the problem here. Just hang out at any tourist location and you can have your face seen in different countries around the world. :p

You misunderstand me. The concern is not of having your picture taken, but of being able to google your name and finding every picture of you on the Internet including google maps. That's why I hate that google is constantly nagging to get my real name and location and for me to use it everywhere to boot.

There is a difference between being seen and being anonymous, Hornet, if that's even your REAL name. ;)
