Remember this device? It looks like a great way to use Windows 8 on non-touch screen PCs without spending a lot of money and the company says pre-orders will ship July 22nd.

This device will only be good for very short periods of use at best. Anyone trying to use it for longer periods of time will get a nasty case of gorilla arm and go back to the keyboard and mouse.

The idea behind something like the Leap Motion isn't to replace a keyboard and mouse but to augment them or allow a PC to be controlled at a distance or on a big screen. Will definitely pick this up.

I came here to say the same thing. Touch is a gimmick.

What's the use case for this crap? Media launchers? A remote is more comfortable and easy to use. Laptops? Even a touchpad is more comfortable and easy to use. Do you really want to wave your arm around to surf the web???

A friend who is a dentist is very excited about this as it will allow computers in his operating theatre much more easily.

Using your smartphone or tablet as a touch input device seems like a much better solution. Anyone who's interested in controlling a TV that way probably already has the necessary hardware to do it, it's much easier to type with, and there's no gorilla arm issue.

Back when I had a roommate and separate media center PC/server in the living room that's how we did it. We had some free touch app on our iphones.

It seems like people that have issues with touch or gestures only envision using a PC in a sitting/resting position with a keyboard and mouse at about 1 to 2 feet away from the screen.

I keep thinking Minority Report, standing at a large screen and working with lots of data. Plus, no more wiping nasty finger prints off screens, so bonus.

Just ordered one.

My left hand, and my porn have a date for July 22nd.

Wow I thought [H]'ers were self-entitled but the comments on their site are on a whole other level. Wow. I am going to pre-order this when I get home tonight.

I have no immediate use for this, but it has a lot of possibilities.

So, you don't think you'd use it for very long? Neither would I for the things I do daily. But, what if some killer application comes along that makes a great use of the hardware? Manipulate images, maps, move around in a 3D world... I don't think Minority Report. I think of Jarvis. It's not a 100% use this thing. It's keyboard, mouse, touch/leap motion.

This would be sweet for a HTPC. Smart phones are terrible remotes because you have to look down also if they get disconnected from the wireless system you have to wait for them to reconnect.

So many possibilities as an additional pheriphal device. I think Microsoft is stupid for not being more aggressive with Kinect integration.

There is a connect sensor specifically for Windows but it's not really been integrated into apps yet, but with Windows 8 it will be just a matter of time I think.

$90 for the ability to move my arm and hand 20" when I could just move the mouse 1"

Seems like a regression but hey motion control is trendy again for five minutes. I could understand an HTPC usage scenario but then again its wired and has to be right under your hand, not exactly portable or remotely placeable - a kinect would probably be a better fit in htpc instances.

I would like having this for Asian character text input actually...

This is as much a mouse replacement as a joystick is a keyboard replacement.

Precisely, way more bandwidth in a keyboard and mouse, but then no reason some people can't have fun with it in certain applications, if I was buying I would at least wait for the buyers remorse listings on eBay after about a month.

Also, remember, a device like this will be good for people with repetitive stress injuries and therapy help. It's so sensitive that it won't require that much movement. I believe it has an accuracy of about .001" in its sensory space. That's pretty damned good if you ask me. A kinect is like a sledge hammer compared to this being a precise scalpel.

I don't just look at these things at how they can replace what I'm already using, but the potential they have in various applications. HUD in a car? Sure. Medical? Yup. Get a different type of display with a projected screen? Use this for input.

Lots of nice things that could be done. It won't replace the mouse on my desktop. Of course not. Just be a geek and imagine the future possibilities!

trendy or not.. I want one.. I was going to pre-order before, but forgot to.. I think I will have to remember to this week.

Keep Dreaming and wishing.

Any who looks like a cool device and I would buy one but I am sure it will be used as much as my Windows 8 tablet is. Sitting gathering dust after I found there are to many limitations to being productive on a tablet. If I want to waste money I'll buy some bitcoins at least they might be worth something someday.

As someone who still scoffs at smartphone... I find I actually want one of these things. A lot.

Actually, that's not very far fetched. Given the XBOX One video on the front page, I'd say that gestures and recognition with the Kinect is very impressive. To adapt this to commands in an OS or into an API which devs can use in their apps? I don't think its just a dream anymore.

I bought one of these things. Looks great and would let me do some 'faux touch' with my current monitor without having to spend for a real touch-screen. I don't expect it to replace the keyboard or mouse at all, but I think its a great idea for augmentation especially when you are simply reading or looking at things (i.e. browsing the internets). Depending on the precision, you could even use it to do some photo retouching or artsy stuff once apps are available or adapted.

Will it be novel? remains to be seen. Certainly cheaper than a Win 8 tablet - but then again I knew exactly what I got that for and while the wow factor has worn off, I actually find that I prefer reading email on it as well as much of my casual browsing when I want to be anywhere else but at my desktop. I mean, that's the purpose of a tablet right? mobility.

...I thought you meant someone was putting Windows into these things.

LeapPad2

And not having to disinfect the mouse afterwards. And not needing a platform on which to operate the mouse - which will also need to be disinfected.

I'm sure OCD people and surgeons who surf youtube while operating will be overjoyed.

HUD in a car?

Sorry officer, I didn't mean to run over that kid. I was trying to pull up the Windows 8 Charms menu with sign language. For some reason it maxed out the volume and I freaked out.

This is as dumb as touchpad stereo/AC controls in cars. How about, you know, physical buttons that don't require you to take your eyes off the road?

Also, remember, a device like this will be good for people with repetitive stress injuries and therapy help.

Hold your arm up and pretend to type with this thing for 5 minutes.

Touch is the primary way people interact with about a billion devices sold last year alone. Or are you saying it's a gimmick for desktop PCs?

PCs. It's fine on smartphones. It 'works' fine on tablets assuming they're being used as toys/content consumption devices. I see absolutely no point to touch/gestures on the desktop other than as a gimmicky feature to push sales of new PCs.

I'm sure the market research says people would love to have this sort of thing. I was really excited about getting a tablet until I bought one. I suspect gesture devices will run into the same issues. The problem is that all the actual use research indicates that gestures and touch are uncomfortable to use (gorilla arm) and not as functional as a mouse, keyboard, remote control, joystick, or gamepad.

About the only actual use I've seen here is certain specific medical settings, but it's not like there aren't sterilization input devices available and I wonder about the cost vs benefit. My dentist loves digital records, but other than a TV or radio for entertaining patients and cameras to avoid malpractice suits he doesn't want any electronic gizmos around when he's working other than actual medical equipment.

This looks much better than touch screen shit.

I saw an article a while back about NY subway stations thinking about putting in touch screen info kiosks, where millions of people can spread all their germs on one glass screen.

Touchless screen like this would work much better.

Do you really want to wave your arm around to surf the web???

seems like you only have to wave your fingers. not your arms.

Gotta say. I like it.

Under $75 and I'll probably bite.

i have a hard time believing it'll work half as good as it did in the video

A goodie a pre-rendered video showing a pipe dream. Show me an actual "hands on" demonstration showing interacting with usable interfaces and we'll talk. Otherwise it's another pointless gimmick to be fed to consumer sheep.

Over time we would see lot of improvements and lot of usage of these thing as it will come in handy. i'll wait for it though see if future product gives longer range.
