For about the millionth month in a row, the Microsoft Xbox was the game console King of the hill. The overall total unit sales and total sales are down from a year ago, but you have to keep in mind there will be a new sheriff in town soon when the Xbox 720 debuts later this year.

Microsoft's press release stated that it sold 261,000 units of the Xbox 360 in March 2013 in the U.S, with a total of $402 million spent on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories.

Surprising it still sells so well. I wonder if the mix heavily favors the lower end $200 SKU.

Also, the library does have a lot of NA appeal, much the same way as PS3 still dominates in Japan in current gen consoles (Wii U had an "accident" on itself :D).

(I looked it up: that was the 27th straight month the 360 has topped the PS3 in NA, but the PS3 finally overtook the 360 in overall sales 3 or 4 months ago.)

Apart from the areas of the world where it's sale has been stopped for about a year now...as no one was buying it...

If Microsoft ends up deciding on a final product that doesn't allow single player games to launch without an active internet connection, there may be a new sheriff in town but it won't be Microsoft.

PS3 has sold ~74.2 million consoles vs 75.2 million for the 360. Not bad I'd say for a system (PS3) that had a year headstart. Definitely wish there was a chart showing the difference in sales for different SKUs

I wonder why.

Weird how people would still pay retail price for a game console that is around 10 years old. Even more weird is why would anyone buy a console in the first place :)

First picture is a non issue anymore get over it. PS3 ylod was just as bad I know. And the second picture I say fuck you cheaters! I've been a live member since day one and cheaters ruin online play for the rest.

They don't just ban you for cheating if you aren't guilty. And the very few times it has happened to non cheaters which is super rare they have corrected it.

I know I replaced my older units for the new slim just for the energy savings and noise. But I've also replaced my PS3 as well for same reasons. My launch 360 did red light and my launch PS3 did yellow light. Still have my launch Wii though.

I have no idea about cheating on consoles, mainly cause I would never want to get involved in that gaming community. Microsoft would have to pay me to play games on Xbox Live.

It's a anti-piracy measure. How many people actually go threw the trouble to...

1. Mod a 360, which I've done and it's a bitch to do.
2. Download or rip the game they wanna cheat.
3. Modify game to cheat.
4. Burn said game onto disk.
4. Log onto Xbox Live and pwn newbs?

I'm sorry, but I don't believe that a lot of people are going through all that trouble just to cheat in a game.

Like I said, I've modded some 360's and they ban you if they detect a modified DVD firmware. Which the creators of this firmware try to avoid. Problem is if you get the latest dash before getting the latest hacked firmware, then they will detect you and ban your console. Even then, some games can come with updates to again detect firmware and ban.

Doesn't change the fact that same people are buying multiple machines. Whatever the reason it is, either for Red Ring, banned console, or just want the slim version.

Believe me, I have friends who have like 2-3 Xbox 360's in a closet cause of Red Rings. I've even offered to fix them, cause I've had success in the past. Same goes for modded 360's. Some people own a hacked and non-hack Xbox 360.

lol, you clearly don't.

People who cheat are banned. It's not too difficult to do.

Banning the cheaters is a great service to the rest of the players and IMO is not a negative at all.

You'd be surprised. Flashing a modded ODD firmware to play ripped games is child's play these days.

The new 360 slim I got last nov. was my 4th xbox I bought from MS, and probably going to be my laat. A lot of the rumors going around make me really dislike the new Xbox as well as my dwindling interest in gaming overall and even more so in consoles.

No, the 360 had the highest fail rate by far.

Lots of things can get you banned. Not just cheating.

Don’t do the following.

Don't use the Services to do anything illegal. You are responsible for your actions and the consequences of your actions on the service, not Microsoft.
Don't harass, abuse, or spam other players, or encourage other players to do so.
Don't scream, yell, threaten, or stalk other players, or encourage other players to do so.
Don't create a gamertag, profile content, Avatar action, Avatar content, or in-game content that other users may be offended by. This includes, without limitation, anything related to or suggestive of: profane words/phrases, topics or content of a sexual nature, hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, or religious slurs), illegal drugs/controlled substances, or illegal activities.
Don't create a gamertag, profile content, Avatar action, Avatar content, or in-game content that references controversial religious topics, notorious people, organizations, or sensitive current or historical events that may be considered inappropriate.
Don't distribute, post, publish, upload, disseminate or discuss defamatory, infringing, obscene, sexual or unlawful materials in any format (images, audio, video, text, etc.). Prohibited materials include, without limitation, child pornography or illegal drugs. “Sound alike” words or phrases or puns that reference these topics are also prohibited.
Don't post links to websites that violate the Code of Conduct.
Don't give out personal information of other players (such as their real name, address, phone number, credit card number, etc.) in any way (including, without limitation, through voice chat or the names you create for your gamertag or mottos). This information could be used by other players for illegal or harmful purposes. You should also avoid giving out your own personal information.
Don't cheat in a game unless cheats have been deliberately enabled.
Don't modify or hack game content to create cheats.
Don’t make unauthorized modifications to your account profile or its contents.
Don't intentionally play with someone who is using unauthorized software or methods to help inflate your game rank or gamerscore.
Don't post links to materials that could harm other users' computers or would allow others to inappropriately access software or Web sites.
Don’t lend, transfer, sell, or otherwise provide access to your account to any individual.
Don’t use your account for commercial purposes (including, without limitation, trading services or in-game content for currency or Microsoft Points).
Don't impersonate, harass, or defame Microsoft employees, moderators, or staff members.
Don't use the forums or chats for any commercial purpose. You may only create an account for yourself as an individual. You may not create an account for your corporation or other business entity.
Any non-game-related conversation that takes up a substantial amount of the forum or chat space and prevents users from finding game-related information may be considered a violation of the Code of Conduct.

You know, I haven't modded an Xbox 360 in years. In fact, I'm not even sure if my Xbox 360 even works. Haven't touched that in 2-3 years. What I do remember is that depending on the DVD drive, can be either easy or painful. The worst I had to do was make a wire that I would tap an area of the DVD drive, that if I'm not careful will short it out. And you do need a very specific Sata controller to do this as well. Via generally works best, but there are some USB to Sata ones that also work.

Unless now it's a single program that does it for you and you just press a button, like on Apple iPhones.

I was using cheating as a broad term, I'm fully aware of all the ways you can violate the live code of conduct.

The PS3 YLOD is caused by the same issue that plaques the early 360's and wasn't as advertised because of course anything involving Microsoft is front page, agony only felt a little of that with the PSN hack.

At least Microsoft fixed these consoles for free Sony did and does not and will never admit any similar problem even though both had issues with the fluxless solder on the gpu's and the manufacture process of said gpu's and the heat up and cool down that breaks them loose.

On top of the ylod the slot load bluray drive has many issues. Don't never offered to fix anything for free, I tried they wouldn't hear it.
Should mention on top of the ylod the bluray drive was replaced at my expense by Sony at 100 bucks a pop.

My launch 360 rrod after 2 years they sent me a paid shipping box repaired it for free ask at their expense.

Shit happens anything made by man can and will break but at least Microsoft was cool about it!

I've heard Nintendo is easy to deal with but then I've never had a console of theirs break.

I sold my old units even my broke PS3 so it didn't cost very much to get new units.

I've fixed both consoles, and the 360 suffered from poor quality solder. The heat from the machine would get hot enough to melt this solder, and create weak or bad solder joints. Hence why heat reflow and or new thermal paste was usually the solution to fix it.

The PS3 though suffered from poor quality thermal paste, and bad design on the power supply. There's a huge fan in the PS3's, and that thing is responsible for cooling the entire system. The power supply though, would get searing hot. It just wasn't enough cooling.

The 360 suffered from cheap Chinese solder, while the PS3 had poor design decision to keep the power supply in the machine, with limited cooling. Both machines suffered from heat that caused solder to weaken.

Nobody is saying that Microsoft didn't do an excellent job repairing these machines. For a lot of people though, they rather go buy a new machine, cause they get it now instead of later. RMA does take a while, no matter how good Microsoft honors their end.

Playing "back ups" is simple, but playing a modded game is not that simple.

But you can pay a crazy amount to cheat and play on xbox live.

It would be interesting to know how many Xbox's on average has the average active consumer has gone through.

I couldn't justify having to buy a 4th Xbox.

Sorry but the PS3 didn't have nearly the problems the 360 has.

I still own an original, bought on lauch 60gb PS3. YLOD didn't even rear its head until way after the console was launched and even then didn't hear to many people effected by it. You hear more about firmware possibly bricking the PS3 then YLOD. (At least at the forums)

I know many people with a PS3, and only 1 person I know who had a YLOD.
I know many people with a 360, and all of them have had problems. Mine had the RROD, my friends sisters 360 had it, then his was screwed from it. I know another friend who has a bad disk drive in it, and overheats. Whines like a god damn banshee.

Though indeed most people are 360 owners, but most of them has had these problems. And although the new console fixes the problem, a lot of people still have the older system. I even know of one person who had a bad slim. He couldn't get warranty on it because his dumbass had removed the warranty label off. All that was wrong with it was a bad disk drive though.

Fortunately my 360 RROD once. And I do play it more then my PS3 (But when it comes to movies and such the PS3 is always in use) and has otherwise, been going strong. So I am still at 1. Though if it where to die again....would not replace it. (At least for a very long while)

The first picture may be a non issue now but it had a extremely high failure rate. Ask anyone how many 360s they have been through cause of hardware failure and most are 2-3. PS3 YLOD had no where near the failure rate of the RROD.

Microsoft bans people straight from XBL to sell more consoles. Im pretty sure PS3 bans are per game.

Every launch PS3 will yellow light unless you have it fixed ahead of time same as every 360 will eventually red ring.

And what you don't seem to get is MS is far easier to deal with than Sony.

My launch PS3 yellow lighted not to far from my launch 360 rrod.

Bluray drive went out twice also.

And to the guy who asked about people replacing them.
I replaced both PS3 and 360 with slim units for power savings and heat and noise all though my slim PS3 is louder with a disc in it than my launch one was. the 360S is damn near silent. that is as long as you install your games.

The 360s should not fail unless the disc drive goes bad.
I'd imagine the slim PS3 would be similar although the 360 had far more drastic die shrinks.

Nintendo and Sega still win in console reliability.

Oh bullshit, now you're just overreacting. The PS3 has no where near the same failure rate. I have a launch PS3 and never had a single issue with it.

We get your defending your console, but to make absurd statements is a bit much. If all you say is true your in the catastrophic failure category of most all electronic products of 1%, not just the average 5% with some type of issue.

There is a reason Microsoft did everything free, and spent a billion dollars to resolve the issue. Sony didn't have too because their products feel within the historic averages.

Your reaching pretty far talking about noise levels, it's a hell of a stretch to make some ridiculous point.

Defending my console? I own and play every console so that's complete fucking bullshit! I don't favor one over the other not one bit, I have replaced both equally and every person I know that owns one OR the other has replaced them the only people I know that haven't are those who barely play either.

The PS3 slim disc drive is fucking noisy not unbearable but still annoying.
The 360s is silent virtually when you install your games.

Microsoft made good after getting egg in their face.
Sony like apple says pound fucking sand and won't admit any fault.

Doesn't mean I don't like Sony's products but they have a lot to learn about customer service.

Hell they could all learn from Nintendo.

Better cross your fingers some day you'll turn that fat PS3 and beep beep yellow light.

Hell I'm not even trying top make a point other than every damn console news tread brings out every console hating or fanboy dickbrain.

Hell the only reason [H] posts this shit is the site traffic and hits it brings.

80 % of the people on this site could give a shit less about consoles.

Only reason I bought a 360 was because it was cheap.

$130 bucks - 50 Target giftcard to catch up on the few real exclusives was totally worth it.

here here to the Xbox 360

love the computer but also the 360

Top notch microsoft, whooooo , did i jsut say that

The issue was lead-free solder on BGA, just like it was with all of the Nvidia GPUs, etc. It had nothing to do with flux, but mostly the fact that these were some of the first uses of the lead free solder to meet RoHS.

YLOD just as bad as RROD?

Oh what was i thinking... Theres a forum thread about it that has no evidence proving your point whatsoever you must be right and all those warranty companies and repair shops saying otherwise are all full of shit.

The YLOD didnt effect anywhere near as many people as RROD did if you believe otherwise you're simply delusional. This has been confirmed by actual sources grounded in reality AKA warranty service companies, retailers etc. In fact IIRC YLOD was not even the top cause for the PS3 failures.

So again making a claim that YLOD was just as bad as RROD is quite simply the most ignorant thing you could possibly say in this discussion and has no base in fact or reality whatsoever. But hey keep telling everyone how you are NOT here to defend the 360, its all a big media conspiracy to bash microsoft.

If you read that thread its a long ongoing thread in the official sony forum for the PS3. You fucking guys don't get it I'm not defending Microsoft, they both fucked up one admitted it one won't.
But if you want to try and make me look like I'm defending one or the other go right ahead I really don't care.
I post about all consoles and if you look in the gaming so thread I have pictures of all my systems I live them all.
I never said it was the same as the 360 issue but it was and still is a major issue for many and larger than Sony will ever admit to.
This is the last thing I'm posting in this thread I said my piece.

And most of the idiots who had a failure with their PS3, most likely didn't give two shits about how small of a space they stuck the fucker in, let alone clean it for the large amount of dust that is getting in the bastard. I would know, the PS3 can suck in dirt. I clean mine at least once a month. Even though I should do this more often then that. (On this thought, I should buy a air filter and mod it to fit on the PS3 vents. That would do wonders)
Mind as well just leave the PS3 in the plastic bag.

Also, that thread is from 2009, and the PS3 released in what...2006?
Can't comment on other PS3 failures. All I know is my original launch console is going strong, and sometimes I will leave it on for days, even close to weeks. Before I shut it off. (I have it set to auto turn off, but sometimes a BD movie that has been paused for a couple days can keep it from turning off. Or having a game in it. Also this was before I setup the auto turn off feature)

Firmware has a higher chance of bricking the PS3, and even then, that is rare. (And most are done when someones power goes out, or some other reason)
