Congress May Try to Regulate Violent Video Games

It’s the logical next step, I suppose, to regulate video games since the actual legislation on assault weapons failed. If you can’t get assault weapons off the streets, regulate the video games instead. A new push by Senator Dianne Feinstein intends to introduce legislation to regulate the video game industry for violent content in absence of industry self-regulation.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said that game publishers need to make voluntary actions to avoid glorifying guns and violence following the Newtown elementary school massacre in December. She noted that Congress would take action if the industry didn't do something.

SMDH, I wonder if part of the bill will be related to better parenting, better diagnosis of mental health issues, and various other factors that play a bigger role and some lunatic going off like this.

Sorry DiFi, like your "Assault" Weapons Ban, this proposal too shall find it's way into the crapper.

These people don't really understand the problem....I really don't believe they even care all that much aside from making themselves "look" good. If they actually cared, there would be ALOT more attention given to "Fast and Furious".

They seem to forget that people are often "assaulted" with six inch blades and box cutters on airplanes.

The news outlets that tell people what they should think haven't been covering it lately because its necessary for them to move on to other current events in order to remain competitive among one another. An news company that focuses on old news will quickly lose the interest of the human herd which hurts ratings and the value of selling advertising space. Don't base too much of what you presume is going on upon what you do or don't hear about coming from the media.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of those things are getting screened out during the usual cavity searches prior to boarding so that the risk is fairly low.

Well, I only 'trust' the media about as far as I can throw them anyway...but I understand what your saying.

as for boarding planes....I guess that's why they're harassing little old lady's and small children

Our tax dollar at work. Its too bad they have nothing else better to spend our money on.

Here's my thing: if violent video games are such a big factor, y'know with CoD and Battlefield and <insert M-rated game>, why don't we see mass killings more frequently? Furthermore, more people are being diagnosed with a mental disorder of some kind. I deal with biploar disorder and I've been playing violent games since before I was 18. I've yet to go shoot up some place, and I suspect that it's the same with many who fall under the vast umbrella of mental disorders. So, really, as we already know, video games aren't the cause.

All this does is blame something other than the killer. Until we do that, no bill is going to go after the right thing. Additionally, they've acknowledged that no measure will completely eliminate the problem, which is pretty small for starters.

Instead of blaming your Adam Lanzas, James Holmes, etc. and stating how screwed up they were, let's blacklist guns, or video games, and possibly (I might be jumping to conclusions here) you have this mental disorder, you must be a psycho.

Anything but saying the killer was bad.

This is the perfect solution to the gun problem.

Lol, ok, I'm joking.

I know Activision-Blizzard and EA make me want to kill people, but it has nothing to do with violence in their games.

She really has no clue.....she proves this again and again

Funny how they ignore violent content in movies,Hollywood regularly glorify the likes of Freddy and Jason, while Hannibal and Norman Bates get their own TV series. I guess they have better lobbyists and more money to line the politicians pockets than the game industry.

Folks, don't get your undies in a bunch. Won't pass legal muster. The industry is self-regulated. The content is rated accurately.

They DID try this with movies, comics, whatever the boogie man of the say was at the time. This will end no differently.

Unfortunately I live in this POS State represented by Feinstein and Boxer. Two total Village Idiots! However, you poor people that live in Colorado, you may have beat our CA clowns out for the Total Village Idiot Award. You have Diane DeGette, one stupid commie. She is pushing to ban High Capacity Magazines. She is of the opinion that if we ban them, once you shoot all the bullets and the magazine is empty, it is useless and has to be thrown away. Pretty soon everybody will shoot all their bullets and then there won't be anymore high cap mags. I wonder if she is the one that wanted to know if the flag we planted on Mars is still there. My sympathy CO, the Libs are screwing up your state just like they did here.

Congress' inability to pass budgets without bloating them up with earmarks and other useless expenses is causing me to rage and giving me homicidal thoughts too... maybe they should regulate that as well!

It's like she's never even heard of the First Amendment. Like, there is 0% chance she can do anything even approaching what she's saying. There should be a clause that institutes automatic recall elections when a politician says something this blatantly stupid, because it's pretty clear they aren't mentally competent.

Another geezer who wants to scapegoat video games for the world's problems because they're after her time and she doesn't understand them.

Meanwhile, nothing will be done about the real culprits in mass shootings: easy access to guns and lack of access to mental healthcare.

Heh, I never saw the point of banning the HC clips either.. Have they never heard of reloading? Besides, even the lower capacity clips are capable of taking a few people out before a reload.. so, what's the damn point?

It is a shame it usually comes down to libs verses cons, dems vs repubs... They're all just fucking politicians.

Easy access to guns? Don't you mean a complete lack of respect for life? Quit blaming inanimate objects and focus on the motivated individual with the will to do harm to those around them.

why not stop with GMO's in our food, that would cut down on alot of human problems since they are relayed and processed crap being shoved down our throats giving us all sorted of health problems.

So next are they going after hollywood?

and the 6 o'clock news showing ware footage?

I guess I need to write my Tennessee reps because country music makes me violent. It's a good thing we're in TN, because that'll make it much easier for us to put a stop to the production of country music.

LOL, NO. Those Hollywood folks contribute too much money to political groups to be attacked.

We need politician control laws. Politicians provide bad role models for kids, and should be outlawed.

I had to, I'm sorry.

I'm not sorry- this bitch can get tossed into a fusion reactor

Oh look

Laws that try to invalidate free speech

Yeah, this has zero chance of succeeding

Drawn kiddy porn isn't a crime, why aren't they going after -THAT- fucking shit first, that puts children in danger more then games does

Can Understanding Not Totally eliminate these stupid congress-people? That didn't make much sense... Oh well....

Honestly, this congresswoman has made me a lot more violent and want to do violent things than any video game, movie or gun/knife has. I would REALLY like to give this woman a kick to the head (not like it would help) to knock some sense into her.

Stupid people cause me to get pissed, not video games (unless you count getting frustrated at a game, but that anger is directed towards the game not outside of it, game gets turned off, anger is gone!).

let us not ask that citizens who are parents take responsibility for teaching their spawn, er, children, about the fundamental sacredness of all human Life, and all Life in general. Why should they? Either they lack the skills or they realize that in a corporate culture these anomalies are handled in a way that protects a marketplace in the guise of supporting the citizens' human values, and hence need only continue to consume to assure that everything works for the best, in the best of all possible worlds.

They would have far less ability to do harm to those around them when they can't walk into any gun store and walk out with an AR-15 with a 100 round drum magazine. There's no reason a civilian needs to own something like that.

Also, if we had universal healthcare like every other developed country on the planet, we'd see fewer shootings, because the nutjobs who commit mass shootings would get the help they need before these things happen.

We are $17 trillion in national debt and this is all they have to think about? I'm sick of this shit. They are more concerned with restricting freedoms because they know the shit is going to hit the fan and they are going to be the first on the walls before order is restored.

It won't happen on so many different levels. Gamers aren't the complacent bunch that many 2nd amendment supporters have become.

Feinswine needs to retire.

Well since as usual they couldn't get any real work done, they have to make it look like they are doing something so they can justify their jobs.

Wait? What? The industry doesn't self regulate? Whadda fuck? If it doesn't self regulate what the fuck is up with all the ESRB ratings on games? Decoration?

It won't pass constitutional challenges, but isn't she basically parroting what the NRA Chief said after Newtown?

That said, i'd swear I just read a report that said that game restrictions are enforced more than virtually any other voluntary system.

Complacent? Aside from automatic weapons, what can't you buy right now that you could 30 years ago? Even the assault weapons ban in the 90's was toothless. The last permanent change was when we had a socialist anti-american president sign the ban on buying automatic weapson. I am, of course, referring to Ronald Reagan.

I'm way more worried about the 1st, 4th and 6th amendments, which have been significantly reduced over the last 30 years, and there's been far more complacency on those changes than guns.

Shows how much you know about anything. Your statement is the reason I need them. Honestly I will be just fine with a 30 rd mag and an AR. Get over yourselves. Cowards like you are the problem. I will die on my feet rather than a slave on my knees.

You don't need anything other than food, oxygen, water, shelter, and warmth to survive either. I take it you like having more than that in life though, so when it comes to discussing reasons why people may or may not need something you might keep that in mind.

Also, if we had universal healthcare like every other developed country on the planet, we'd see fewer shootings, because the nutjobs who commit mass shootings would get the help they need before these things happen.

Wait, you mean Obamacare isn't universal healthcare? That's funny because that's how it was being sold to everyone. That means either your assertion is wrong or the people selling Obamacare were lying.

Either way it comes down to this: People will kill other people. They always have, they always will. It's human nature, and no amount of bans, legislation, or dreams of utopian societies will ever change that. You can take away the tools for killing as much as you like and people will find or invent new ones. The only way you're going to stop it is to fundamentally change human nature. Good luck with that.
