Microsoft Corp. today announced the appointment of Judson Althoff to the role of president, North America Sales & Marketing, and corporate vice president. Althoff will manage a team of sales, marketing and services professionals across the United States and Canada, within a division that was a significant contributor to Microsoft’s US$73 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2013.

A business technology leader with more than 18 years of experience, Althoff previously served as senior vice president of worldwide alliances and channels and embedded sales at Oracle Corp., where he led worldwide indirect and embedded sales. During his 14 years at Oracle, Althoff held a number of senior positions, including group vice president for worldwide alliances, and vice president of global platform and distribution sales. Before Oracle, he held several sales leadership roles at EMC Corp.

If there's anything Microsoft needs at the moment, it's more skillfully organized marketing efforts. I've said it before, but it's worth mentioning that a scary-large number of home users think the Surface Pro is a Microsoft iPad and have no idea there's a difference between the RT and Pro aside from having some vague idea that one is "better" than the other. The same goes for the benefits they're trying to present in a unified platform of WP, Xbox, Office 365, and Win8/RT.

That and they really need to get marketing out of their enterprise product documentation. If anyone's read the Server 2012 Intro they published, it's a sad sales attempt to tout the benefits of Hyper-V's latest version and the cloud-centric features of the OS versus explaining capabilities which seems like a secondary goal at best.
