Legitimate complaint or just another cash grab?

The French telecoms regulator ARCEP said it had asked prosecutors to investigate Microsoft Corp's Skype for failing to register as a telecom operator. Skype has not complied with the regulator's repeated requests to register as an "electronic communications operator", ARCEP said in a statement on Tuesday.

This is France ... I don't think it is even possible for them to have a legitimate complaint ... the Universe would explode if they did ;)

I think that it might require us to actually look at what ARCEP defines as a "telecom operator". If VoIP providers are subject to ARCEP, then it's might not be too unreasonable for Skype to be registered.

I have a feeling that the definition of a "telecom operator" might be too loose, however.

You know, there was a time when France was considered one of the most powerful nations on earth before they fell into decline. Sure, you're laughing at them now, but do you honestly think the same thing won't eventually happen to the US?

According to some people on this site they seem to think the US is already in a state of decline ;)

Actually I normally don't care about France one way or the other but when you start mandating a 36 hour workweek, you sue Apple because they have their employees working at night, you sue companies that make you work on Sundays, you sue Amazon and Google because they are hurting your book stores ... then you will deserve a little friendly and not so friendly ribbing

There are more than a few nanny state folks in the US on both sides of the political spectrum that deserve some of that same medicine

Cash Grab. Governments always impede on the rights of the free market to demand money for being in business. And if the business doesn't pony up well the government is going to take away its right to be in business. If the government were to get out of the free market meaning no more protection monopolies, fewer regulations etc... we would be seeing better services and the like.
So with France demanding that Microsoft register as a Telecom Operator, I assume that involves huge fees so that it can help pay its failing socialist policies. No wonder they need to charge a 75% Tax to the rich. And when they all leave, where will they get their money from?

Cash Grab.
First it was the EU suit to dismantle IE.

I would have little patience for this shit if I was Microsoft.
Why didn't the French Government sue the guys who invented Skype before they sold to Microsoft? Simple, no money in it.

Let the French sit in the dark and use soup cans for communication. They are essentially irrelevant in the world as it stands.

You wouldn't be seeing better services, you'd be seeing people treated like dirt, massive monopolies and no consumer rights. Basically it would be worse than the industrial revolution.

And hey, it's not just government entities that are lobbying for regulations, it's businesses themselves that lobby for regulations to keep their competitors from taking control, or to completely shut out new and upcoming competitors from getting off the ground.

This is 66% cash grab and 33% French gov being the French gov. The front-bottom of Europe.

Its France being France, they don't know the meaning of the words innovation and free market enterprise

they are in deep shit economically and need every Euro they can get to help fund their 35 hour, retire at 62 (soon to be 60) lifestyle.

I say burn it down.

Just a FYI due to the heavy protections to private life, France is actually a safe have for Rich and Famouse who have a family, even with the 75% tax. (Remember that those taxes are by brackets).

If its France, its a money grab. People are leaving France for Russia, that says something very important.

Yeah, leaving France to become Putin's personal bitch. I'd suggest you take a quick look at his statements after he got there lol. Talking about hardcore cock sucking in a public place.

That is my point, people are leaving France to go to Russia, its suppose to sound as bad as it does. Not just the one actor now, several other joint him (mostly to avoid giving up all their money).

I had 25 days on my last job. How is that a bad thing huh.

I think the reasoning behind this "money grab" is the fact that Skype offers a paid services. If everyone else in the field has to play like a telecom, so does Skype.

If France's actions are so ridiculous then I suggest encouraging them so we may reap the lessons of their mistakes.

Putin hasn't been the president of Russia for a while now. :p
