Today on international Safer Internet Day, Microsoft Corp. released the results of its second annual Microsoft Computing Safety Index (MCSI), revealing that more than half (55 percent) of global respondents are experiencing multiple online risks, yet only 16 percent say they take multiple proactive steps to help protect themselves and their data. This year the MCSI also examined mobile safety behaviors, uncovering that although less than half of respondents (42 percent) run software updates on their personal computers, only 28 percent run regular updates on their mobile devices, potentially compounding their risk.

Maybe microsoft could increase web safety by changing their MSN website to a page full of colorful icons that link to websites, news feeds, local weather, and games. Then make the webpage always open whenever you open IE and remove the feature to change the default homepage.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where we didn't need online (or offline) protection? Think of how wonderful it would be

You mean treat the idiots like they're still on AOL? Yeah, they had problems back then as well.

It still doesn't stop people from defeating their own installed security applications "wtf, I wanna see this porn, damn anti virus won't let me! now if I just disable it..." clicking the damn OK button whenever it comes up "yes, yes, yes, yes, ok, ok, yes, ok, can I get to my porn yet?" or even if it's not porn, they want to install random BS to play stupid little games on websites, it's 2013 and people using the internet for over a decade still need to be told to not open random email attachments "but it says I won a million dollars!" or "but it's from my long lost african prince cousin!".

That garbage is why I don't work on computers for friends and family anymore. After re-installing windows, hunting down all of their dumb drivers, getting everything up to date, installing everything I can to try and idiot-proof it, then having an hour long conversation about decent browsing habits, not randomly clicking yes/ok, not opening every damn thing in their inbox, their shit is all jacked up again less than 24 hours later.

Isn't 55% also Internet Explorer's market share.

Only now it's your fault that it's jacked up, since you were the one that worked on it last.

Yeah... that was probably the worst part about it. But since I quit fixing people's screwed up computers, there's so much less BS to put up with. No random phonecalls at 9pm because they can't print their kid's homework the night before it's due. No more calls about their computer running so slow "well can't you just overclock my pentium 3 to run like a modern PC?". Sure, there was lots of complaining at first, but after about 2 years all of the.... computer illiterates finally quit coming to me with their problems.

Unfortunately I still have to professionally deal with IT morons who wonder why things don't work right when they haven't updated anything in 5-10 years...

"How come this switch keeps having problems" "well did you install the firmware update that fixed it 2 years ago?" "no"

"Our windows 2003 server doesn't work with our new SAN, and it's also slow as dirt" "well it seems like the last time you updated anything was 2004, maybe that's got something to do with it?"

But yes, this is an issue that will never go away. Bad users will continue to be bad users. The automobile has been a part of life for how many decades now? Yet there are still tons of people incapable of replacing bald tires, keeping tires inflated, replacing brake pads, changing or cleaning air filters, changing their oil or at the very least understanding that this stuff needs to be done and going to a professional to do it.
